ASSISi is especially grateful to Director Andreea Dutu for her key role in making the event such a success. We hope that the interactions with Romanian design professionals, academic experts and administrative authorities will contribute to greater use of these valuable technologies in the future.
The #ASSISi event in Bucharest was a succes, where the participants had the great opportunity to interact with some of the most important specialists on #seismic_isolation and #energy_dissipating_systems in the world! We thank all the speakers for coming and sharing with us their valuable knowledge and also the atendants for the interest and fruitful discussions that were generated! The event was a great collaboration between #ASSISi (having with us the president and three directors) and the #Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest, and supported by #EU-Conexus alliance! We are also grateful to our sponsors: #GERB (Germany), #FIP MEC (Italy), #TIS (Türkiye), #MAURER (Germany), #HIRUN INTERNATIONAL (Taiwan), #DAMPTECH (Denmark), #FREYSSINET (Italy), #ARFEN BRB (Türkiye) and #EPS (USA). See you again soon in our next event! And let's Build better before the earthquake comes!

The most valuable insights to the performance of seismically isolated buildings come from observations in real earthquakes, and the latest in ASSISI’s technical article series, by Professor Mineo Takayama of Fukuoka University, Japan, gives an overview of the response of isolated buildings in Japan in recent large earthquakes, including the Kumamoto earthquakes of 2016 and the Mw 7.5 Noto Peninsula earthquake of January 1, 2024. https://lnkd.in/gs_bnqwX Please visit our website to see other articles in the series.

ASSISi is excited to announce our inaugural 2024 GLOBAL DESIGN AND INNOVATION AWARDS program. The Awards will recognize excellence in design and research for seismic isolation and energy dissipation technologies around the world. Submissions are sought that demonstrate innovative and creative uses of #seismicisolation and energy dissipation technologies, and particularly that respect and enhance regional and vernacular construction methods and materials. Submissions may be new or retrofit construction, and may be a building, non-building structure or component, or a bridge. Entries close on 15 October 2024 and winners will be announced November - December 2024. Please see our website for details: Awards Program – ASSISi (assisisociety.org)

One of the most readable, and visually attractive books on #seismicisolation is “Seismic Isolation for Architects” by Andrew Charleson, Associate Professor of Architecture at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and Adriana Guisasola, ASSISi member, architect and Associate Professor in Structures at the Faculty of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design, at Mendoza University, Argentina. We’re pleased to offer on our YouTube channel a seminar given by Adriana, at MEF University in Istanbul, Turkiye on May 16th 2024, hosted by Bahadır Şadan, MEF Professor, ASSISi Secretary General and President of DiD/TASI Deprem İzolasyon Derneği / Turkish Association for Seismic Isolation. The seminar is a great overview of the book, highlighting the architectural creativity possible with seismic isolation, and also a nice general introduction to the practical, implementation aspects of the technology. https://lnkd.in/evvna7d5

The newest article in our ongoing technical articles series, by Professor Murat Dicleli, Chair of the Department of Engineering Sciences, Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi / Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkiye, gives an overview of the new #seismicisolation provisions of the Turkish Bridge Design Standard, released in 2020. The new TBDS provisions build upon those of the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Seismic Isolation Design and the European Standards, EN 1998-2 and EN 15129, as well as ASCE/SEI 7-16, and provide new approaches to near-field effects, minimum requirements for serviceability, and property modification factors. https://lnkd.in/gSvxy7wV Please visit our website to see other articles in the series.

The latest in ASSISi’s technical article series summarizes an investigation of the response of 19 seismically isolated buildings in the Mw 7.4 Hualien earthquake in Taiwan and provides insights into the performance of three of the buildings, two of which were seismically instrumented and a third that included a video monitoring system. The article has been prepared by Professor Shiang-Jung Wang, ASSISi Regional Coordinator, and Dr. Chung-Han Yu, of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The response of the buildings yet again shows the excellent, real-world performance of seismically isolated structures, but also underscores the need for continued work to improve and refine architectural and non-structural component movement details. https://lnkd.in/dA9VJX8j Please visit our website to see other articles in the series.
