Egg prices hit a record high this week in the latest consumer price index. But of course consumers didn’t need a government report to know that eggs have become terribly expensive and hard to find lately. The average price per dozen eggs hit $4.95 but that masks how bad it is in some places. Out in California some consumers are paying $12.99 or more. The main reason egg prices are so high is the ongoing bird flu outbreak that has prompted officials to slaughter nearly 159 million birds since the outbreak began in 2022. The high prices prompted Nevada to approve a law that will let the state suspend its cage-free egg law in the hope of lowering egg prices. But will the plan really work? https://lnkd.in/ggD4PWFF

https://lnkd.in/evAJeZvZ with Chris Rugaber U.S. retail sales dropped sharply last month, in part because cold weather kept more Americans indoors, denting sales at car dealers and most other stores. Retail sales fell 0.9% in January from the previous month, the Commerce Department said, after two months of healthy gains. It was a much bigger drop than economists expected and the biggest decline in a year. The average temperature in January was the lowest since 1988, according to Pantheon Macroeconomics, and was particularly disruptive in the more temperate South. Devastating fires in Los Angeles may have also impacted spending.
