We prefer to use “people seeking asylum,” “people of forced displacement” or “people who have experienced forced displacement,” instead of “asylum-seeker.” Why do we prefer this? ➜It centers PEOPLE first. ➜It acknowledges the absence of choice in fleeing one’s country. ➜It acknowledges that the people are not the issue, rather, the system is. Person-first language puts humanity before labels. This approach promotes respect and reduces stigma by recognizing the individual as a whole, rather than labeling them solely by their situation or condition.
