Atrevida Science recently attended the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) Update webinar organized by the National Science Foundation (NSF), where exciting advancements in technology and innovation were highlighted. The NSF's TIP Directorate is making significant investments in many areas and in particular energy and clean tech. One of the standout initiatives, the Convergence Accelerator program, is offering incredible opportunities for teams to explore new ideas and prototype solutions to tackle national challenges. NSF’s focus on fostering innovation ecosystems and building diverse partnerships is truly inspiring and pivotal in shaping the future of R&D in the U.S. With programs like NSF’s TIP and #NSFSBIR, innovation comes to life. Atrevida Science is wrapping up its Phase 1 #NSFFunded work and actively preparing to submit a Phase 2 proposal. 🌿 Inspiring insights from the clean energy revolution! 🌿 At Atrevida Science, we had the privilege to attend the virtual conference "Stories From the Front Lines of an American Business Revolution," organized by the Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE), Clean Energy Business Network (CEBN), and E2 The keynote speaker, Bob Keefe, E2 Executive Director offered a compelling exploration of how groundbreaking policies—such as the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act—are shaping the future of our economy and climate. We also gained valuable insights from Lisa Jacobson(BCSE President) and Lynn Abramson (CEBN President) on the cleantech funding opportunities that are propelling U.S. innovation forward. Day Three takeaways to consider for our National Science Foundation (NSF) funded phase I work: > We talk extensively about blade loading and stress when the rotor is spinning during operation, but even when a wind turbine is idling, the blades can experience large loads and deformations, which can put high stress on the entire structure-perhaps an easier problem to model with substantially attractive benefits. > Sometimes leading edge erosion can create a hole on the leading edge of the wind turbine blade large enough you can put your whole hand in it > “We test at the highest Reynolds number we can afford.” - the wind energy industry is all about optimization, from design to operation to research and experimental testing. Day Two takeaways to consider for our National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project: > $15B in onshore O&M with as much as 57% of costs related to unplanned repairs. > Since 2004 >> wind energy capacity has grown 20X for onshore wind and 100X for offshore wind >> rotor size is 2X larger for onshore wind and 3X for offshore wind > Bolts, bolts, bolts…the interest and talk about research on bolt damage and failure keeps popping up…it’s another way to understand loads and their effect on the entire system.
