In the final week of 2024, the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences released a Special Issue on Critical Minerals, expertly edited by Carl Spandler and Chris Yeats. It's a wonderful contribution of 10 open access papers, showcasing a diverse range of deposit types and commodities, highlighting the immense potential and diversity of Australia's critical minerals systems. Allison Britt and I contributed a paper titled "A review of critical mineral resources in Australia". We provide an overview of critical minerals lists, Australia's critical mineral deposits and their contained resources, their global significance and highlight opportunities. Some key points include: 👉 Critical minerals are so intrinsic to modern and low-carbon technologies that 65 of the 118 elements are listed as critical by Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Korea, the EU, the UK and the USA. 👉 Comparing forecast growth in Critical Minerals and Strategic Materials demand against known economic resources reveals broad global shortfalls necessitating new resource discovery and development. 👉 Australia has an enormous critical minerals endowment with documented resources of 26 of the 31 commodities on Australia’s Critical Minerals List in 477 deposits, of which 75% remain undeveloped. 👉 Geological characterisation of about half of Australia's critical mineral deposits reveals all first-order ore-forming physiochemical conditions have concentrated critical minerals in Australia and the Cenozoic era was the most prominent for critical mineral deposit formation.
