What an amazing few days highlighting National Apprenticeship Week! A delegation from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour and Economy, along with Economic Counselor Georg Lack, visited ENGEL North America to see their outstanding apprenticeship program firsthand. ENGEL was just awarded with the prestigious Austrian State Prize for Innovation 2024 for its two-stage process for more energy-efficient plastic recycling. 🤝 This was followed by a roundtable discussion at the Austrian Embassy with high-level representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Commerce, and U.S. Department of Education, where the experts reviewed milestones achieved so far under the U.S.-Austria apprenticeship MOU signed in 2022 and discussed future areas for cooperation: 🔄 Apprenticeship Mobility/Exchange 📊 Occupational Frameworks /National Standards 🌟 World Skills Ambassador Schneebauer emphasized the importance of changing perceptions around apprenticeships, particularly highlighting the benefits of increasing outreach to high schools for recruitment purposes and educating parents about the advantages of such programs for young people. THE SOUND OF MUSIC TURNS 60! ✨ Together with Österreich Werbung / Austria Tourism & Tourismus Salzburg GmbH we hosted many guests from the tourism industry to get a glimpse of the celebrations for the 60-year anniversary of the world famous movie “The Sound of Music” that are taking place in #Salzburg in the coming year. After some warm words of welcome by Ambassador Petra Schneebauer and Deputy Governor of the State of Salzburg Stefan Schnöll, Kristina von Trapp from Trapp Family Lodge, and Leo Bauernberger, CEO of the SalzburgerLand Tourismus GmbH, highlighted the movies’ worldwide significance. Katrin Frauenschuh from SalzburgerLand Tourismus GmbH, Dr. Kristina Hammer, President of Salzburger Festspiele, and Astrid Steharnig-Staudinger, CEO of Österreich Werbung / Austria Tourism, shared some Austrian Lebensgefühl & took the guests to Salzburg´s most beautiful places while they enjoyed Austrian delicacies from a menu inspired by recipes of von Trapp’s personal chef. Industry leaders Gruchmann-Licht Astrid (SalzburgerLand Tourismus GmbH) and Michael Gigl (Österreich Werbung / Austria Tourism) moderated the two insightful presentations, enhancing the dialogue with their extensive expertise. This week, we welcomed guests of all ages for the screening of "Rising Voices" - a powerful documentary by Bertelsmann Foundation showcasing Vienna's innovative approach to youth political engagement through institutions like the Children and Youth Parliament. Vienna stands out for its successful approach to engaging youth in democratic decision-making, setting a benchmark for cities worldwide. 🇦🇹 A special thank you to our panel featuring Kirsten Eddy (Pew Research Center), Tarsi Dunlop (German Marshall Fund of the United States) and moderator Tony Silberfeld (Bertelsmann Foundation) for leading an insightful discussion on "Generation Vote: Shaping Democracy Through Youth Participation." AUSTRIAN DELEGATION AT GERMAN AMERICAN CONFERENCE AT HARVARD The 16th annual German American Conference at Harvard Kennedy School wrapped up this past weekend 🌍 The conference was attended by numerous students from Harvard as well as U.S. and German officer candidates. Defense Attaché Major General Norbert Huber was joined by four Austrian cadets currently on a student exchange at United States Military Academy at West Point 🇦🇹🇺🇸 A highlight of the event was the highly anticipated lecture by COL (GS) Markus Reisner, a renowned expert on military affairs, who once again captivated the packed audience with his insights on the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. 🎙️ A powerful platform for transatlantic dialogue and military strategic exchange! #AustriainUSA #transatlanticrelationship Österreichisches Bundesheer (Austrian Armed Forces) Theresianische Militärakademie

The inaugural Advanced American Seminar was completed last week, bringing Austrian students to New Orleans and Washington, DC. The program is a cooperation between the Universität für Weiterbildung Krems, the Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies at the University of New Orleans, and the Austrian Embassy in the United States. Together, they curated an immersive program for the students in New Orleans and Washington, DC, thereby exposing them to two very distinct American cities and their cultures. In New Orleans, the focus was on the regional economy and environmental challenges, with visits to some of the economic drivers, including the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, the Port of New Orleans, as well as the World Trade Center New Orleans. A highlight was a conversation with the Mayor LaToya Cantrell at the City of New Orleans. In addition, the group took a deep dive into New Orleans history and culture at the The Historic New Orleans Collection and learned from experts at Tulane University and The University of New Orleans - and got to experience Halloween Night in the French Quarter. After their transfer to Washington, DC, the focus shifted to American politics and the Presidential Election. Students heard from diplomats at the Austrian Embassy, from experts at the The Brookings Institution, the Bertelsmann Foundation, and The World Bank Group, as well as from from political scientists at Georgetown University and The George Washington University, from Congressional staffers on Capitol Hill, and from the American Jewish Committee (AJC). The highlight of this portion of the program was of course Election Night in Washington, DC. The Embassy thanks its partners in making this program a reality and is looking forward to host the next cohort!

VERMONT BUSINESS DELEGATION VISITS STYRIA A delegation of senior labor and commerce officials from the State of Vermont visited Styria from October 28 to 30, 2024 at the invitation of the WKO Steiermark. The focus of the visit, which was a follow-up to the Austria-Vermont cooperation agreement on dual education signed in 2023, was the exchange of information on Austrian apprenticeship programs, the promotion of educational partnerships and the strengthening of economic relations between Vermont and Styria. The delegation met with State Parliament officials at the Styrian State House before visiting KNAPP and Anton Paar to learn about their innovative apprenticeship programs. At the ICS Internationalization Center/EEE, discussions followed on new initiatives to promote apprenticeship training programs. The visit concluded with a reception hosted by Barbara Eibinger-Miedl, Styrian Minister for Economy, Tourism, Regions, Science and Research, to explore further opportunities for cooperation in bilateral educational and economic relations. #Statepartnership #apprenticeship #AustriainUSA Vermont Chamber of Commerce State of Vermont
