About us
Since 1943, the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) is an international trade association which has represented an industry dedicated to the efficient removal and reuse of automotive parts, and the safe disposal of inoperable motor vehicles. ARA aims to further the automotive recycling industry through various services and programs to increase public awareness of the industry's role in conserving the future through automotive recycling and to foster awareness of the industry's value as a high quality, low cost alternative for the automotive consumer. ARA encourages aggressive environmental management programs to assist member facilities in maintaining proper management techniques for fluid and solid waste materials generated from the disposal of motor vehicles.

Last Friday, on America Recycles Day, ARA's Emil Nusbaum, attended a demonstration on lithium-ion battery safety hosted by Montgomery County, Maryland's Department of Environmental Protection. Emil attended the event and learned firsthand from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue's Hazardous Materials Team about suppressing lithium-ion battery fires. This public awareness event drew attention to the risks associated with the improper handling and disposal of lithium-ion batteries. Over the last several years, there has been a dramatic increase in fires resulting from the improper disposal and handling of lithium-ion batteries. These fires have taken place in residential homes, commercial businesses, and in the recycling stream. Therefore, it is important that the public be made aware of how to handle lithium-ion batteries. Emil is currently working to develop best practices and recommendations to the State of Maryland in his duties as Commissioner for Maryland's Commission to Advance Lithium-ion Battery Safety.

Last week, ARA was interviewed on Marketplace's regular radio program, which is aired on NPR. ARA's Emil Nusbaum, had the opportunity to discuss California Senate Bill 615, which is legislation we have been working on that governs vehicle traction batteries. Through our efforts, we were able to make sure that the language in the legislation met the needs of the automotive recycling industry. #araadvocates
