Who says #hightech development can’t work hand in hand with social impact? Here in the Bay Area, we are proving it, with examples like the remarkable community work led by Rachel Kamen and her team at Waymo showcased at today’s event at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The event highlighted how technology can evolve to meet social needs - a vision I hope to see applied across many layers of urban transportation, as we strive to achieve at Urban Innovate. A huge congratulations to Sharon Giovinazzo from the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (#GoodBoy!) and Lana Nieves from Independent Living Resource Center SF for sharing their insights on how this technology is transforming their daily lives. Had an invigorating day at the Autonomous Vehicles & the City Symposium in San Francisco, hosted by University of San Francisco's School of Management and sponsored by industry leaders such as Waymo, Cruise, Zoox, etc. The symposium provided a unique opportunity to hear from a diverse group of speakers, including representatives from leading AV companies, researchers, lecturers, and policy planners. Some key takeaways from the symposium included continued discussions on safeguarding AV user data, advancements in safety technologies for AVs, Europe’s initiative of integration of AVs into European public transport and shared mobility, leveraging public-private partnerships to solve complex transportation challenges or use cases, innovative business models like "Mobility as a Service" and "Mobility on Demand," and evaluating the urban impact and policies needed for sustainable and equitable outcomes. The deep insights shared by the speakers illuminated the path forward in integrating AVs into our urban fabric and sustainable transport future. The University of San Francisco Autonomous Vehicles and the City Initiative explores the future of autonomous vehicles for cities and roads. The initiative explores how the the future of mobility our initiative is taking shape at the local, statewide, national and international levels.
