Surgical supply costs account for up to 15% of a hospital's operating expenses—a significant portion of hospital budgets. At Avant-garde Health, we’ve worked with health systems to uncover actionable opportunities for savings without compromising care quality. Our latest blog post explores three critical areas for improvement, backed by real-world examples: - A specialty care hospital saved $4.9 million on implant costs through vendor negotiations, demonstrating the potential for substantial savings. - By identifying cost discrepancies and aligning usage with more cost-effective practices, a specialty care center achieved savings of $1.6 million on aortic valve supplies. - By optimizing lower-cost implant components, an academic medical center saved $798,000, demonstrating the value of reducing supply variation. These examples illustrate the transformative power of a data-driven approach to surgical supply management. Ready to explore these strategies further? Rotator cuff repair is among the most common outpatient orthopedic procedures, yet significant variability in costs and care pathways exists. Our recently published The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Inc. study, "Defining the Cost of Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair", sheds light on opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs across healthcare systems. 🔍 Key Findings: - Cost Variability: Across 921 cases, the cost ranged from $2,282 to $6,833, with a mean of $4,094 ± $1,850. The greatest variability in care time was observed in post-acute recovery. - Efficiency Gains: By addressing variability in episode duration, a single hospital could save up to 640 care-hours annually, paving the way for increased surgical capacity. - Standardization Impact: Aligning suture anchor costs across institutions could lead to savings of over $217,000. 🎯 Why This Matters: These findings highlight opportunities to optimize resource allocation and reduce inefficiencies, offering insights for healthcare systems to enhance both operational performance and patient outcomes. 👏 Acknowledgments: This study was a collaborative effort with contributions from the Avant-garde Health and Codman Shoulder Society Value-Based Care Group. New publication alert! https://lnkd.in/egXf-P3E A recent analysis of Medicare data (2016 to Q3 2022) revealed that Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA) had a lower initial revision rate (1.9%) compared to Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) (3.5%), but higher rates for subsequent revisions. RSA also incurred greater Medicare costs for both the initial procedure and revisions. Avant-garde Health uses this data to improve surgical outcomes and financial performance, working with the Codman Shoulder Society to help healthcare systems optimize care quality and cost management through collaboration between surgeons, researchers, and healthcare leaders.
