Today we publish our monthly Aztlan Quant Model Factors and Allocations Report. Regionally, the model is indicating an increase in North American allocations. In terms of sectors, the model continues increasing allocations in financials. In Homer’s Odessey, when Odysseus departs for the Trojan war he leaves his son Telemachus under the tutelage of Mentor. At the end of the story, it is revealed that Mentor is Athena, goddess of wisdom, in disguise. Most of the great investment masters had the opportunity to work under great mentors, like Warren Buffett and Ben Graham, Stanley Druckenmiller and George Soros…And they all emphasize the utmost importance of mentorship: “Don’t worry about making the most money this week or next month. When I went and offered to work for Ben Graham, I said I’d work for nothing, and I meant it. Just the idea of being turned on, look for the job that is going to turn you on.” Warren Buffett "If you're early on in your career and they give you a choice between a great mentor or higher pay, take the mentor every time. It’s not even close. And don't even think about leaving that mentor until your learning curve peaks." Stanley Druckenmiller I’ve always recognized how lucky and privileged I’ve been in general, and with the mentors that I’ve had in particular. For instance, I had the opportunity to work with great professionals at EMM and Ashmore, true pioneers in emerging markets investing. But my first and most important mentor, by far, is my dad Enrique H. Garza. He didn’t teach me value investing concepts like the margin of safety, or how to analyze a company (although I did study from his MBA books when I was a kid). He taught us math (and I mean, all of us! Siblings, cousins, my daughters, nephew and niece, even my wife recently studied with him for her recent SAT test!). But he taught me some of the most valuable lessons in life including the value of hard work, perseverance, the value of education and cultivating one’s mind, the importance of being daring and bold with actions in the pursuit of big goals…above all integrity. I am so grateful for this mentorship that continues. These are the things we look for to be part of the corporate culture in the businesses we invest in, and the kind of values that I hope we are imbuing at AZTLAN Equity Management. It´s the first week of the month! Time to share our Monthly Market View and Analysis report. Some key takeaways: *US and Global Small caps just a tad below the previous high of Nov 09 2021. One of the longest recovery times on record (790 days and counting), but the trend seems to have some legs to it given that fundamentals like EPSG and ROE for small caps continue trending higher. *US market has decoupled from the ROW and is now uber expensive absolute and relative. However, this is all driven by profitability and growth. ROE in the US has stepped up strongly since the GFC and is now 2x higher than for the ROW. This could fuel further market gains and establish new/higher “normalized” valuation multiples. *The picture for mega caps is even more dramatic. The level of profitability and economies of scale is just mind-blowing. We must do more research, but this might be the first time in history in which the largest companies concentrate as much of the overall earnings and are way more profitable than the rest. ROEs > 60% for the Mega-caps! *International markets still present oodles of great companies to choose from but the task requires a lot more research and analysis to build portfolios that can compete with such great performance in the US. Japanese equities have basically traded flat over the past six months … … despite a resumption of a depreciation trend in the yen. We’ve seen the weaker yen contribute to gains in one of our Japanese holdings. It’s a macro move that we believe is a positive indicator of normalized conditions there. Currency moves bear watching: 🔎 We look at eight fundamental variables across four models to assess where we think things are headed. 🔎 That helps us assess the currency risk in a country or region.
