If you follow our report month to month, it’s like seeing the movie in slow motion, always keeping in mind that the market is volatile, and no one knows with certainty what the more immediate trend will look like. Our expected returns based on very simple methodologies remain hovering around 8-11% for the US equity market and 3-6% for DM International/xUS. The earnings season so far has delivered a 7% beat vs consensus while ROE for large American companies continues to outperform the ROW. In a recent conversation with a friend and client she was asking how we source our investment ideas, especially in the less well-known international SMID space. I went over explaining our process, our research team, our quant model, our travels and company meetings. In reality, at AZTLAN Equity Management our best ideas come from thinking, contemplating, and thinking again. In my view, realizing that the most important job we have as investors is to think is the turning point in the maturity curve that we all go through in this job. I think this is so hard and takes so long in part because we are trained from a young age “to do things”, to generate an output. When the great Jim Simons was once asked what his special power was, he simply said “I do have a capacity to just contemplate”. This month of February we have wonderful skies in the Northern Hemisphere with the apparent planetary alignment or planetary parade along with Orion, Taurus, the Pleiades, the Atlas comet (couldn't capture last month). A spectacular view… and whatever short-term market noise is going on, it doesn’t matter.
