This month, CMS announced the 15 states that will receive funding to invest in maternal health strategies. The TMaH, or Transforming Maternal Health, model, tackles the maternal mortality crisis by focusing investments in three areas: ➡️Access to care, infrastructure, and workforce capacity ➡️Quality improvement and safety ➡️Whole-person care delivery This is the largest federal initiative to date to standardize maternal health care across states, and it marks a massive step towards reducing disparities and improving outcomes nationwide.

Happy Friday! We're heading into the first weekend of the new year with a reflection on the maternal health industry in 2024 -- the progress, setbacks, and possibilities for 2025 and beyond. New population health data brought critical attention to the risks facing pregnant and postpartum mothers in the US, while policy changes signaled a positive trend for virtual health in maternity care. Reporting requirements and reimbursement discussions dominated the conversation around remote patient monitoring, and a rise in hypertension among young women flagged a priority for innovators. Babyscripts' collaboration with Lyft Healthcare saved new and expectant moms an average of $227 over the course of the program. "As a low income family it does help. I have no drivers license and so it's been a hardship lately." "Rides are super expensive. So having free ones really helped me save some extra cash. I had two last week. And both days totaled almost $60." "I no longer have to worry about money when I'm planning my appointments. This Lyft pass has definitely made life so much easier." More importantly, it ensured that mothers got to their appointments. "The Lyft pass has been a godsend this last month. My car currently needs repairs that are take to time to pay for so I have been using public transportation to get around. The Lyft pass has provided me relief about how to get to and from my appointments that are now every two weeks." "The free Lyft pass made it easier to get to my appointments on time. I have not missed any appointments since I've had the free Lyft pass from babyscripts." But perhaps the biggest benefit was the relief from anxiety: “I felt less worried about being on time. I felt like I could focus on my appt and my twins. I felt no stress since my transportation was taken care of. It made it so that I had one less thing to worry about. I was able to focus on my appt and not worry about being late. It put my mind at ease.” Read more about the awesome impact of this initiative 👇 https://hubs.li/Q02-M16M0

Access to prenatal care is one of the primary indicators of maternal health outcomes. Leveraging existing infrastructure to get women to their appointments and reduce no shows is a no brainer. “At least in the urban setting, [some] patients don't have cars … So the only other option would be public transportation. And if they had to make the conscious choice of like, I'm going to go into work and get my shift done, or, take a half a day or full day off, for what ends up being a 20-minute appointment? You can see how this is one of those things that's going to make it easier for them to show.” Anish Sebastian talks to Fierce Healthcare about the impact of Babyscripts' collaboration with Lyft Healthcare 👇 https://hubs.li/Q02-KPP90

Women who didn’t have risk factors going into pregnancy are experiencing maternal hypertension at higher rates than ever before, The Washington Post reports. The rates are even worse for BIPOC mothers. RPM for blood pressure is essential for managing the unique and critical demands of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy -- complications that disproportionately target minority women. By investing in RPM for HDP, we can improve patient outcomes and also create a more efficient, equitable healthcare system. What differentiates maternal hypertension from chronic hypertension? Well worth the listen 🎧 Valerie Rogers, senior director of government relations at HIMSS, offers her thoughts on making data work for maternal health equity: 👉 Telehealth + RPM are key to improving outcomes at the community level 👉 There needs to be greater access at the state level to digital self-monitoring tools for women. These tools should be available with no out of pocket cost to the patient. 👉 Self-monitoring tools enable women to take charge of their own health. 👉 Strengthening and supporting reimbursement of care is critical, from pre-conception through all phases of pregnancy through first year postpartum. 👉 Integrated telehealth models for maternity care services enable new approaches to person-centered care.
