  • Help Us Preserve Black Legacies 🖤 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For over five years, BADG has been curating the BADG Archive—a powerful resource reclaiming our narratives and fostering cultural dialogues that inspire future generations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Archiving is more than preservation; it’s a creative journey. Through initiatives like the Obsidian Virtual Concept House, “Blackouflage” at Design Miami, Futures Facing Mural, and our current Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum commission, The Underground Library, we are designing accessible collections that honor Black cultural heritage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But we can’t do it alone. Your contributions are vital to sustaining our BADG Lab initiatives—programs that empower, educate, and preserve Black makers’ stories. Together, we can continue to build an archive that celebrates Black excellence and ensures these legacies endure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Donate Today and commit to sharing Black cultural heritage for generations to come! https://lnkd.in/e4FXd_Vx

  • WE ARE BADG! We did this… ✊🏿✊🏽✊🏾 We are overjoyed to reveal "The Underground Library: An Archive of Our Truth," a Black Artists + Designers Guild Lab initiative commissioned by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, for their exhibition "Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial," opening through August 2025. "The Underground Library" was conceptualized and designed by the BADG Curatorial Team Malene Barnett, Jomo Tariku, Leyden Lewis, Nina Cooke John, and Penny Francis Eclectic Home LLC. The BADG Collective was inspired by the Underground Railroad, the clandestine network established in the early 19th century, through which many enslaved African Americans traveled in search of freedom. This library installation represents a 21st-century sanctuary surrounded by art, objects, artifacts, and books of Black legacy. The abundance of objects honors African Diasporic legacies offered by over thirty makers in art and design. In reimagining and repurposing Andrew Carnegie's personal library, BADG invites visitors to examine the power of home libraries and the significance of literacy, remembering that African Americans were denied the right to read under slavery. This BADG installation was made possible through the invaluable support of Akerman, Crafting The Future, Grace Farms Foundation/ Design For Freedom, Hachette Book Group, Kravet, LebaTex Inc., The MIT Press, Randy's Booth Co., Shaw Contract Hospitality, Thayer Coggin Inc, and Window Works NJ. #BuildwithBADG #TheUndergroundLibrary #BADGLab #DesignTriennial #CooperHewitt

  • #BADGMember Spotlight Penny Francis Eclectic Home LLC "Good design should reflect you. Have fun. Don't overthink it." - Penny Francis Penny is the owner and principal of the Design Firm Eclectic Home and has over 20 years of experience. Her creativity has supported BADG Lab and Licensing projects, including Obsidian Virtual Concept House and the Pottery Barn "Black Joy Collection." Penny Francis supported the creation of the Black Joy Collection, featuring triumphant textures, colors, and patterns that layer — a rhythm that dances from room to room. The Divai (The Wine Room) in Obsidian was an interior designed for a family who appreciates the region and the wine that it creates. Rather than focusing on the function and storage of the wine, Eclectic Home wanted to create a space that could be enjoyed and where people could engage in the process of tasting and drinking.

  • Black Artists + Designers Guild Lab initiatives represent the vanguard in Black art and design. The Lab provides space and support for artists and designers to express their artistry, liberated from the constraints of client specifications. OBSIDIAN is our award-winning virtual concept house launched in 2021. It was designed to invite new conversations about the space of home as a place of thriving for one million Black families. Guided by the belief that Black futures are equitable, sustainable, and liberatory, we have created a virtual space that manifests our collective imaginings. Creators conceptualized their spaces with a focus on four principles: Innovation, Technology, Sustainability, and Futurism, further conveyed through seven key fundamentals that express the intent of Obsidian and its mission: Wellness, Identity, Sustenance, Terra, Legacy, Ancestral Futures, and Dwelling.
