In 2011, Ballard Marine Construction mobilized quickly to Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong for a high-stakes pipeline inspection for an international client. Accessing the pipeline through a 32” access port, our team deployed the vLBV ROV with a 2000-meter tether. Equipped with sonar and HD cameras, our ROV provided precise data on joint integrity, sediment buildup, and out-of-round conditions. 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝗺? In 2006-2007, Ballard Marine Construction partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to improve fish passage at The Dalles Dam in Oregon. Our team removed an obstructive support wall and built a new 193-foot structure in a safer location for juvenile salmon. The Challenge: In freezing conditions with high river currents, our divers completed over 600 dives involving diamond wire cutting, hydraulic tools, and tremie concrete placement. To prevent freezing, we operated out of a custom heated lean-to and utilized hot water suits to keep equipment and team members safe. 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 In 2011, Ballard Marine Construction joined forces with the U.S. Coast Guard and regional environmental agencies to tackle the salvage of the Davy Crockett, a derelict vessel leaking oil into the Columbia River. Our team removed over 4 million pounds of steel and debris and prevented 32,000 gallons of oil from polluting the river. Despite high river currents, near-zero visibility, and tough weather conditions, we executed an in-river containment, stabilizing the vessel and protecting the surrounding ecosystem – all while maintaining a spotless safety record.
