A remarkable design feature of the headhouse at The New Terminal One at JFK is the 10 “tree columns” that support the outer edges of the slanted roof. Supported by a two-inch-thick box column, each configuration contains a steel quasi-diamond-shaped node in the middle with four sloped steel “branches” extending outwards. Rather than build the nodes out of laminated plate, the 85,000-pound nodes were forged out of solid steel by ELLWOOD Specialty Metals. An in-house shoring system was used to erect the tree columns with 40 telescopic towers for supports. Banker Steel together with NYC Constructors fabricated and erected 33,000 tons of structural steel for the 2.6 million square foot state-of-the-art terminal. Banker Steel participated in the Worlds of Opportunity Career Expo made possible by Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance and Central Virginia Community College. This event allowed middle school students across the region to explore in-demand career opportunities for their future.
