The battery world might not be grinning broadly at the moment, but the Battery Innovation Days 2024 in Barcelona brought back questions, ideas, and hopes that we must address without delay. The challenges are significant, but the event provided a vital moment for reflection on what Europe needs to do to progress. A sincere thank you to ACCIÓ for hosting, with special appreciation to Riánsares López and Tomás Megía for their support. Edel Sheridan's vision for Europe's Battery Future 🔋 at the SET Plan 18th Conference: "Investing in manufacturing is key, but let’s not forget the importance of education and hands-on experience. One of Europe’s weakest areas is manufacturing. Exploring new chemistries like solid-state and sodium-ion batteries is critical, and I’m excited about the strategic plan changes and the future impact of our Task Forces. We need to understand the demand for different battery types and explore combining various cell technologies. But with innovation, recycling is becoming more complex. To make recycling economically viable, let’s ensure regulations drive, rather than hinder, our progress. Implementing battery regulation correctly is essential: should we prioritize second-life usage, or go directly to recycling?
