What will it take to build a truly regenerative future? 🌍 On the latest episode Tasteland podcast, GOB CEO's Lauryn Menard discusses with Marissa Daisy Firke and Francis Zierer how building a better future might require a “call and response” approach with the materials we use. Take GOB's first product: mycelium-based earplugs. By rigorously testing the material for sound-dampening and ergonomic properties, the team created not just a sustainable solution but a superior one. As Menard explains, “We’re listening to the material and employing it for this use case. If we apply that approach to our built environment, to all the things we use, we can move toward a more stable place.” In this episode, she shares the origins of GOB, why it’s time to rethink the era of convenience, and more insights on #theartofbuilding a regenerative future. 🔗 Listen to the full episode now on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/ghrpMTmG

If magic, at its essence, is a way of catalyzing energy, then today’s most potent spells might just be words and images (memes, tweets), and technology (Youtube algorithms, LLMs) the vehicle that amplifies their power. How does technology shape, or even manipulate, the meanings we derive from the content it offers up? These are just some of the ideas we explore in a recent interview with Toby Shorin. We're excited to announce our first research residency with writer and researcher Toby Shorin, during which he'll explore the intricate connections between culture, magic, and technology. To kick off the engagement, Shorin recently joined Baukunst co-founders and General Partners Kate McAndrew and Tyler Mincey alongside Stories Managing Editor Allison Fonder to dive deeper into the topic of magic. "Since I’m basically interested in how cultural change happens, I’ve looked a lot at both the media and the content of what people believe," Shorin shares. "This means trying to understand the symbolic structure of our world and sometimes making an intervention in it. That’s one way to think about what magic is." 🔍 Teardown Library Event Recap with Baukunst 🔍 We had a fantastic time hosting a teardown session with Baukunst, diving deep into Tonal, the at-home fitness device designed by Whipsaw. Notably, the hosts included the design team, engineering from Tonal, and an investor in the product; it takes a team of specialists to bring a product to life. Here are a few insights that sparked great discussions: - Pandemic Impact: The pandemic drove a surge in consumer interest, but Tonal’s team faced supply chain challenges that held back fulfillment—a powerful reminder of how external factors can disrupt even the best-prepared companies. - Ingenious Engineering: We noted several parts doing "double duty," like using the tension system to guide arm movements, and clever software tricks that enhance each physical component’s performance, creating a seamless user experience. - Thoughtful Design Details: The choice to hide screws and use spring-loaded arms speaks to Tonal’s commitment to a clean, high-quality aesthetic, driven by design. - Lessons in Manufacturing: This project underscored the complexities of navigating supply chains, sourcing parts, and working closely with manufacturers—so much to learn beyond pure engineering! Thanks to everyone who joined this fascinating teardown! #TeardownLibrary #Engineering #ProductDesign

A few key takeaways from GP Kate McAndrew's recent interview with Authority Magazine on why it's so important to empower more women to become founders: "When women lead, extraordinary things happen. I have personally seen women build great companies in a way that is more collaborative than hierarchical, more regenerative than extractive, and is a force for co-creating the kind of future I want my child to live in...Since the status quo was built neither by nor for us, it’s inevitable that our presence at the helm will shift the center. This is important." 🔗 Read the full interview now: https://lnkd.in/gW5yEzd4
