About us
Bay City News is a lifeline for Bay Area residents, businesses and government agencies in need of information about where people live, work and play. As the region’s only general-interest wire service, Bay City News plays a vital role in keeping communities informed, whether it be through breaking news reports, up-to-date disaster information, in-depth public event coverage, or updates on local criminal and appellate court cases. We cover the core nine-county area of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties as well as Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Joaquin counties. Bay City News journalists report on the news that matters to the 8 million Bay Area residents and businesses. Proudly independent and under new local ownership in 2018, Bay City News provides real-time reports directly to media organizations, news websites, public affairs firms and government agencies throughout the region. We also cover the big topics of the day, including housing, transportation, immigration and the environment. The Datebook calendar, published twice daily, is an essential tool for anyone interested in public affairs, politics and government with its continually updated list of daily news events scheduled in the nine-county Bay Area. Used by public agencies, media and business subscribers alike, Datebook provides detailed information on press conferences, visiting dignitaries, public conferences, government meetings and court appearances. With our affiliated nonprofit arm, Bay City News Foundation, we aim to support public service journalism for the San Francisco Bay Area. By attracting philanthropic support through BayCityNews.org, we are expanding geographic and topical coverage for millions of people across this diverse region, partnering with other news organizations, helping train a new generation of journalists, and creating multimedia tools to reach broader audiences. The Santa Rita Union School District's board in Salinas unanimously agreed to extend its after-school program for children speaking Mixteco, an #Indigenous #language from southern Mexico. District officials estimate that more than 60 students participate in the after-school program, learning Mixteco while strengthening their English. “We speak Mixteco. It’s important — it’s good, not bad,” said teacher Abigail Martinez. Reporting by Anna Leah for Bay City News https://lnkd.in/gEShh5Cr

The annual event is one of the largest #pride parades in the world. The outspoken support for the #LGBTQ+ community and the city’s history of advocating for LGBTQ+ rights make San Francisco a prime destination to participate in the celebration. "It’s been so healing living out here and I know San Francisco is a safe haven for #queer people," said Melanie Wood who marched on Sunday with Human Rights Campaign. The Richmond City Council voted unanimously to add the Oil Refining Business License Tax, dubbed the “Polluters Pay” measure, to the November ballot. If approved by voters, the potential $60 million to $90 million per year in tax revenue could propel the city’s Green-Blue New Deal resolution. The City of Richmond, California passed the resolution in 2021 with the goal of moving away from a local economy based on fossil fuels toward one founded on environmentally sustainable jobs. But accomplishing those goals will require working with Chevron — the city's largest and perhaps most contentious employer. Reporting by Ruth Dusseault for Bay City News https://lnkd.in/g4Awsq8N

Worried not only about their clients’ loneliness, they also were concerned that some people could experience atrophy if they did not get physical movement while confined at home. They created an online Hub with resources. By June 2020, The Arc San Francisco was offering regular Zoom classes, which continue today, as the organization celebrates Disability Pride Month in July. There’s a lot going on around the Port of Oakland and up and down the estuary that people just don’t typically see. At least not from the water. The tour is narrated and there’s a lot of big numbers and history tossed about. Reporting by Tony Hicks, photos by Ray Saint Germain for Bay City News READ: https://lnkd.in/gzc4H2H5

Dozens of Black women have gathered in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park last week to honor Juneteenth and create an art installation comprised of living “statues” to take the place of ones that once stood there. “The energy that we will provide is stronger than the metal,” Bay Area artist Dana King said. “It goes back generations and it goes forward generations. I know that we’re survivors. I know our strength, our perseverance. And it’s all going to be on display, based on the women that will stand around that plinth today.” Reporting by Anna Leah for Bay City News https://lnkd.in/gvVuyDyM
