About us
The Berger Partnership is a Landscape Architecture firm that strives to create meaningful, sustainable environments meshing innovative design practices with real world situations. All projects are undertaken with the aim of creating spaces that are integral and inseparable from the city and community that surround them. Sustainable and regenerative design is a core value of Berger Partnership dating back to the receipt of three Audubon Society awards in 1978. Since then we have participated in Washington’s first LEED-certified project and first Gold-rated project, and most recently the first projects in the world designed to meet the Living Building Challenge for a mid-rise commercial building and park site under the Landscape and Infrastructure typology, the Bullitt Center and McGilvra Place Park. To stay current on trends affecting our industry we develop research documents that explore recent sustainable practices: Water Management Strategies (2007 WASLA Merit Award); Functional Landscapes: Assessing Elements of Seattle Green Factor (2010 WASLA Merit and People's Choice Awards); Fundamentals of Integrated Design: A Precedent Based Introduction to Sustainable Sites Initiative and The Living Building Challenge; Productive Neighborhoods: A Case Based Exploration of Seattle’s Urban Agriculture Projects (2012 ASLA Honor Award).

We are honored to have worked with Microsoft and its partners to build the award-winning East Campus in Redmond. The campus has been named the Sustainable Development of the Year at the 2024 Night of the Stars Awards event, hosted by the NAIOP of Washington state. The NAIOPWA Night of the Stars program recognizes the best commercial real estate projects in the state. Our project – the new East Campus -- reflects Microsoft’s commitment to employees and the Puget Sound community. It is designed to enhance productivity and create optimal spaces for hybrid work, thoughtfully built with a focus on sustainability, accessibility, wellness and fostering community. The ASLA Student Award of Excellence in Communications goes to Lily Daniels, our 2023 intern, now employee! The beautiful book is founded on Lily’s love of Seattle’s water ways with an exploration into the city’s huge collection of publicly owned street end parks along our vast lakes, salt marshes and riverbanks. Her thoughtful research and stunning graphics offer a glimpse into how we can elevate, and reimaging street ends as interconnected landscapes where human experiences and ecological enhancements thrive.

Overlook Park, a new public park is in the works on Friday Harbor with big views and new connections between the waterfront and town. Perched between Friday Harbor House and The Island Inn, the park experience begins with an overlook pier like structure. The first point of departure is a series of steps and viewing eddies that ascent to the waterfront. Materiality of the park is inspired by weathered wood, organic shapes, and geological striations. #parks, Olson Kundig

It won’t be too much longer until the southern edge of the MarketFront pavilion and plaza at Pike Place Market will finally connect to Overlook Walk, the new aquarium and Waterfront Park! When MarketFront was completed the Viaduct still stood. The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP Sellen Construction Pike Place Market Foundation

We are so excited to share that the City of Everett, WA approved Everett Housing Authority's entitlements for the Park District this month. This is an ambitious 16-acre development with up to 1,500 mixed-income housing units, new community-centered retail and civic uses, open space and other neighborhood amenities near public transit. MAKERS led the entitlements portion of the project over a two-year process, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of the region's most accomplished designers and experts (Framework Cultural Placemaking, GGLO Design, MIG, Berger Partnership, Heffron Transportation, Inc., Ecotope, Inc., EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC, REAL RETAIL INC, Graham Baba Architects, Johnston Architects, and NATALIE QUICK CONSULTING LLC) over a two-year process. The Park District represents a new model of sustainable mixed-use development, with much needed housing clustered around a new park and pedestrian-oriented streets connected to the neighborhood. We look forward to seeing the project realized in the coming years! #housingdevelopment #affordablehousing #neighborhoodplanning #communityplanning #urbandesign #everettwa

Freeway Revolt: You may have noticed this small but significant freeway remnant – a simple structural arch, or “Bent," preserved and integrated into the Washington Park Arboretum landscape . It is a physical and temporal marker, symbolizing the citywide movement that stopped the freeway expansion and destruction of homes, neighborhoods, and parks by a diverse coalition of activists. It stands as an enduring reminder of what could have been and celebrates the power of grassroots civic activism.
