  • 🚧 Project Spotlight: Lock & Dam 9 Cofferdam Design 🚧 Berns Infrastructure recently delivered a customized temporary cofferdam design for a Contractor working at Lock & Dam 9 on the Mississippi River in southwest Wisconsin. This unique design includes two mirrored U-shaped cofferdams, each standing 30' tall, equipped with sheet pile and plate sheeting, and four levels of internal walers. The cofferdams are engineered to withstand full hydrostatic pressure, as well as potential wave, ice, and impact loads. In collaboration with the Contractor, we explored cost-effective solutions by modifying existing cofferdams to meet the project's specific space constraints. Drawing on years of experience on the Contractor side, we’re committed to implementing robust safety measures, including fall protection and tie-offs right from the design phase. We’re excited to continue supporting this Contractor on future projects and are always ready to bring innovative, efficient solutions to the table! #InfrastructureEngineering #CofferdamDesign #CivilEngineering #ConstructionSolutions #BernsInfrastructure #SafetyFirst #ContractorCollaboration #MississippiRiver #TemporaryStructures #EngineeringInnovation

  • Enhancing Safety: The Anderson Dam Seismic Retrofit Project The Anderson Dam Seismic Retrofit Project, located in Morgan Hill, CA and led by Valley Water, is a critical infrastructure upgrade to improve the resilience of Santa Clara County’s largest reservoir. Built in 1950, Anderson Dam was not originally designed to withstand modern seismic forces, and recent studies revealed vulnerabilities in the event of a major earthquake. Having lived in the area for several years and been to the site several times, I can attest to the significance a failure of the dam would have on the surrounding area if a large seismic event occurred and improvements were not made. This project includes strengthening the dam’s embankment, upgrading the spillway, and installing a new Lower Anderson Dam Tunnel. This tunnel will allow for controlled water release during emergencies, protecting downstream communities as the main retrofit work proceeds. Beyond public safety, the project also prioritizes local ecosystems, minimizing impacts on wildlife that depend on Anderson Reservoir. The Anderson Dam Retrofit is a proactive step in enhancing infrastructure resilience, demonstrating the importance of forward-thinking engineering solutions to safeguard communities. • Behind-the-Scenes: Designing a Temporary Structure Ever wondered what it takes to design a temporary structure for a major infrastructure project? It’s more than just calculations and blueprints. It starts with a deep understanding of the site conditions, materials, and project goals. Then comes the creative problem-solving—how do we ensure stability and safety while optimizing for time and cost? Finally, we translate all this into a detailed design that will be executed on-site. Through every step of the process, communication with the client is a key to creating a successful design. #EngineeringProcess #BehindTheScenes #Infrastructure #ConstructionDesign #CreativeEngineering #ASCE
