About us
The Besal Lighting Education Fund was established in 1983 as a nonprofit endowed fund in tribute to the late Robert J. Besal. Mr. Besal contributed more than 30 years of knowledge, professionalism and service to the lighting industry. The Robert J. Besal Memorial Education fund has awarded nearly $1.5 million in scholarships to students in illuminating engineering programs. The Besal Fund aspires to encourage talented and committed students to excel at studies which will lead them to a career in the lighting industry. The Fund is made possible by contributions from Acuity Brands Lighting, its agency partners, sales representatives and employees. Students on campuses who have qualified for the scholarship can apply for the merit-based scholarship through the University Besal liaison. As we approach 2025, we’re proud to announce the launch of The Acuity Fellows program, a partnership between Acuity and the Harvard Business School Club of Atlanta (HBSCA). Through this program, Acuity will fully fund an annual HBSCA Social Enterprise Initiative (SEI) scholarship administered by the Club, empowering local nonprofit leaders to further their education and amplify their impact. “The partnership between Acuity, HBSCA and Harvard represents our values, and the Acuity Fellows program has the ability to have an outsized, compounding impact on the community.” – Neil Ashe, Acuity CEO. HBSCA’s Social Enterprise Initiative (SEI) Scholarships grant local leaders access to executive education courses at Harvard Business School. Since its inception in 1997, the Club has awarded more than 100 outstanding nonprofit leaders in Georgia with the SEI Scholarship. The investment from Acuity helps to future proof this program and continue to accelerate the positive impact of non-profits in Georgia. Our last (but certainly not least) #BesalFund board member feature for the year is Dave Nocar! After college, Dave began working for Acuity Brands in their Marketing Training Program in 1985 then went to work for Federated Lighting in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia market in 1987. Fun fact- his father, Dave Nocar, started Federated Lighting in 1976! Dave has a very personal connection to the Fund as well; “My parents were very good friends with Bob Besal and his wife. We were invited to their house for many Sunday dinners. It is great to be able to contribute to helping the Besal Fund to continue to grow. Given these perspectives, it is only natural that I have been passionate about the Besal Fund since its inception.” Thank you, Dave, for your continued support for the Fund and for sharing your passion of the lighting industry as a whole! We appreciate you 😊
