About us

Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown from one original chapter to almost 1,500 middle school, high school, and college chapters worldwide. Best Buddies programs engage participants in each of the 50 United States, and in 50 countries around the world. Best Buddies’ 8 formal programs – Best Buddies Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Citizens, e-Buddies, Jobs, Ambassadors and Promoters – positively impact nearly 700,000 individuals with and without disabilities worldwide. Best Buddies volunteers annually contribute, at no cost to their communities, support services that equate to more than $155.2 million USD. As a result of their involvement with Best Buddies, people with IDD secure rewarding jobs, live on their own, become inspirational leaders, and make lifelong friendships.

  • Best Buddies Tennessee is in need of Citizens volunteers across the Greater Nashville Area. The Citizens program supports the development of friendships between adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. Hear from a current friendship pair about why they love the Citizens program! “Being a Nashville Citizen is one of the truest opportunities I've had to practice being a human that is just present with another human, and for that, I am so grateful to Best Buddies. My best buddy is amazing! He has a sense of humor that can turn the most brittle of faces to a ray of sunshine. He is engaged in life and knows what true friendship is: the repeated, intentional presence with the soul of another. We go out to eat, go to the events the best buddies put together, and pretty much anything else we think of. I wanted to be a buddy because I have been drawn to those that typically get overlooked and felt like those with IDD don't always get seen as the beautiful human they are. So thanks, Best Buddies, for the opportunity to be a friend.” “Having a buddy is good. You can relate to each other and find new things to do together. You can go out to eat or make a list of things to do. It's a good idea to do what you both like and keep an open mind to try new things.”                To learn more about the Citizens program or our current volunteer opportunities, email tennessee@bestbuddies.org.
