A DIFFERENT RANGE by Del Shields Cowboy Music and Poetry He told me, “we all ride a different range. No two end up the same. We’re meant to follow our own path son. It’s just the rules of the game. As one man considers his neighbor’s course, to him it may seem strange. Just remember we all have boundaries, that border another’s range. To some the bright lights of the big city nights, guide their path and feed their soul. While others are nourished on pure solitude, and simplicity is his goal. Don’t covet the range of another man son. Tend the ground that’s beneath your feet. Seek satisfaction on the soil where you stand. Be rewarded from your Master when you meet. The range you ride may be rocky and steep, or green meadows may be your lot. Wisdom will guide you if you seek her out. Sometimes her leading is all you’ve got.” I listened close to each word he spoke. I took his speech to heart. Though I’ve strayed at times and lost my way, I vowed to play my part. We learn a great deal through our good and ill, if it truly is our own brand we’re ropin. Our neighbors learn to trust us, and they come to be a friend. Soon the gates to our ranges are left open. As the years pass by, I call on his words. I now understand more than then. We do all ride on our own different range. But we all cross paths in the end.
