School superintendents are required to wear many hats. They are visionaries, leaders, and advocates who shoulder much the responsibility of shaping the educational experience for students, staff, and the broader community. But when we ask, “What is the MOST IMPORTANT role for a school superintendent?”, we tend to hear answers that encompasses a blend of strategic vision and human connection. Or what we've been calling "championing student success." What would you say is the most important role for a school superintendent? For school leaders, architects, designers, educators, or anyone who has been involved in a major renovation or new construction project for a school district — what has been your favorite part of the process? Amanda Hastings' perspective resonates deeply with episode one of the new Second Class Foundation series, What We Show Them that highlights the challenges schools face when they’re in desperate need of new facilities. Some of the most rewarding moments come from hearing how small improvements, like a functioning HVAC system or addressing structural issues, can significantly impact students and staff. But the truly inspiring moments happen when the community starts to dream bigger. We’d love to hear about your favorite moments from a past renovation or new construction project. What stands out for you? I just returned from an incredible experience at EDspaces where I had the privilege of presenting “A Vision for the Future: How Student-Centered Engagement Can Shape the Design Process” alongside Sarah Bartz. This presentation focused on equitable student engagement as a means of ensuring student voices are at the forefront of the design process. Additionally, I was honored to be interviewed on the Better Learning Podcast about radically student-centered spaces and the transformative potential of designing with—not just for—students. The energy, innovation, and meaningful connections I experienced at EDspaces were truly inspiring. Thank you to everyone who shared ideas, engaged in thoughtful discussions, and contributed to this impactful event. I look forward to continuing these conversations and advancing the future of education design together!

Mission-Driven Entrepreneur Focused on Improving Education: @Kay-Twelve, @Education Leaders' Organization, @Better Learning Podcast
"What is your favorite movie or TV show related to school?" That was our Better Learning Podcast question of the week at EDspaces in Houston. The answers were amazing (some surprising!) and prompted great discussions. Thanks to everyone that participated and look out for the episode to release in the coming weeks. On a personal note, this was the best EdSpaces conference I've been to in my 15 years in the industry. If others are not feeling the tipping point in our industry, I'd challenge you to look around. The design intent and research to improve the learning environment is aligning perfectly with the furniture industry. The days of building a spec to bid out furniture are coming to an end in favor of the new wave of selecting your furniture partner early in alignment with the building design & pedagogy/culture shift. This is producing better results for the schools, teachers, students and communities. The few still talking about specs snd treating furniture as a commodity are going to miss the opportunity to be part of this shift that is much more rewarding & impactful. #RadicallyStudentCentered™ #BeTheChange #YouBelongHere #ListenCareFollowThrough #LFG!

We're excited to announce the release of our latest episode of the Better Learning Podcast, recorded live at the LearningSCAPES Conference in Portland! This special episode brings together industry experts to discuss our favorite phrase, "Radically Student Centered™" In a time when education is rapidly evolving, addressing the concept of being “Radically Student Centered” helps school leaders and educators navigate a range of current challenges—such as changing learning styles, the need for flexible spaces, and the integration of technology. By bringing this conversation into the mainstream, we can inspire educators and designers to think boldly about the impact of their decisions on students’ daily experiences. When students are at the center, everyone involved in education gains a clearer purpose: to build spaces where students can truly excel. https://lnkd.in/gfbuTX7r A4LE-Association for Learning Environments, Second Class Foundation, Education Leaders' Organization, Kay-Twelve, Catalyst @ Penn GSE #BetterLearning #BeTheChange #RadicallyStudentCentered #LearningSCAPES #Portland #Oregon #Education #Leadership #Design #YouBelongHere
