We've been strong supporters of charter reform in #Portland since the beginning. Our city has changed a lot over the last century and it seemed like now was the perfect good time to reimagine how leaders at city hall could best represent the new city we all find ourselves in today. It's been amazing to see more than 100 members of our community come forward and share their visions for where we go next, including a handful of our members. This came as no surprise, it makes sense that people known for building businesses and organizations from scratch would lean into the opportunity to do the same with our local government. James Armstrong, Debbie Kitchin, Chad Lykins, Steph Routh and "Rev" Nat West all ran great races and though they didn't end up in seats on council after all the ballots were counted, we know the city is going to continue to benefit from their talent and commitment to a our city. One of our other long time members, Keith Wilson, founder of TITAN Freight Systems ran for mayor on a platform of charting a path towards our region making some huge strides in helping houseless Portlanders find ways off the streets. Portlanders listened to his vision, looked at his small business bona fides and his record as a champion for the environment and chose him to lead our city into our new form of government. Research shows that small business owners have many of the traits that make for great public servants; their great problem solvers, they're embedded in community with a great understanding of local needs, a high amount of trust in the communities they look to serve, they tend to have bipartisan appeal and are fiscally responsible. Portland's small business owners are showing up yet again just when we all need them the most. We will continue to show up as well as we all navigate this new world together as we work towards, a better Portland. The number one question I get from folks about our work at Better Portland is "What is it you all do?" I always start by saying "We open doors that local businesses generally can't open on their own." Today was a great example of that. We got to partner with our friends over at Latino Founders and a dozen local business owners to sit down with Carmen Caballero Rubio to hear about the city's new "Office of Small Business" and how the consolidation of permitting is going. In turn, the business owners shared some horror stories about trying to get permits, priorities they had for the city in working with small businesses (the city should be a customer to more small businesses) and a few shared about why they are so bullish on expanding their businesses to Downtown. Excited to continue to help businesses learn more about how the city works and get them opportunities to build connections with our city leaders. ! PORTLAND IS POSSIBLE! - was a SOLD OUT smash success. 🎟️🎤💥 Thanks to sponsors including Better Portland (which I am on the board of). We got to hear from candidates running for City Council and Mayoral candidates including Carmen Caballero Rubio, who I support as the next Mayor of Portland. Vote for her! 🗳️🙋🏽♀️ The style of the event was like a "game show", which got pulled off very well. 👏🏽 It was entertaining and frankly hilarious.
