The impact of work schedules on preventive healthcare access is a critical challenge in employee wellness. Recent studies show that employees with non-traditional schedules, particularly in sectors like transportation and warehousing, face significant barriers to accessing preventive care - leading many to delay or skip vital health screenings altogether. While solutions like at-home testing kits are helping bridge this gap for some conditions, workplace-based screening programs are a powerful way to increase participation in preventive care, with some organizations seeing 80%+ increases in screening rates when bringing services directly to employees. As employers and benefits leaders, we have an opportunity to reimagine how we deliver preventive care services - moving from a traditional medical setting to meeting employees where they are, whether through mobile screening units, on-site health services (like Bexa), or flexible scheduling options. https://lnkd.in/eZq22Gx7

About half of all women have dense breast tissue, which not only increases breast cancer risk but also makes traditional screening less effective at detecting abnormalities. The good news is that modern screening technologies, including elastography-based approaches (like Bexa) that aren't affected by breast density, can provide accurate screening results while significantly reducing the need for additional diagnostic testing - dropping from the traditional 30% follow-up rate to less than 5%. This is important because if a test comes back positive, the follow-up imaging procedures typically fall under insurance deductibles, creating unexpected costs for both employees and employers. If you're looking to provide cost-effective health benefits that work for all women regardless of breast density, contact us to learn more about how Bexa can help transform your employee screening program. https://lnkd.in/gnDbehhZ

"Femtech" - technology solutions focused on women's health and well-being - is projected to be a $60B industry by 2027, but most Femtech startups struggle to secure the funding and insurance coverage needed to scale their innovations. Bexa stands out in this space with our FDA-cleared breast cancer detection technology that combines AI-powered elastography with high-frequency ultrasound - solving the critical challenge that 60% of women aren't getting screenings as prescribed. For employers and brokers evaluating employee health solutions, Bexa exemplifies how revolutionary technology can modernize women's healthcare, moving beyond decades-old approaches to deliver meaningful health outcomes. https://lnkd.in/g5Q_YzFg

Nearly half of all women have dense breast tissue, which can mask cancer on mammograms and increase cancer risk - yet many insurance plans don't cover the supplemental screening needed for early detection. The FDA now requires women to be notified about their breast density status, but without comprehensive insurance coverage for additional screening methods like ultrasounds and MRIs, this knowledge alone isn't enough. At Bexa, we understand that navigating preventive care coverage gaps is a major challenge for employers and brokers, which is why we're committed to making advanced women's health screenings more accessible through our innovative benefits solutions that complement existing health plans. When women have access to comprehensive screening options, we can catch breast cancer earlier - leading to better outcomes and reduced healthcare costs for both employees and employers. https://lnkd.in/gP4ND-6V

When a woman can't get time off work or find transportation to a medical appointment, even the most advanced healthcare solutions become meaningless - which is why it's a positive sign that physician screening for these social barriers has nearly doubled since 2017. This shift is especially critical in breast cancer detection, where we see huge disparities - women of color and those from underserved communities are twice as likely to die from breast cancer, often due to social barriers preventing early detection. As benefits leaders, reimagining workplace health means bringing solutions directly to employees, eliminating traditional barriers like time off work, transportation challenges, and complex scheduling - because the most effective healthcare innovations meet people where they are. https://lnkd.in/grgfhgp6

Women in their 20s and 30s represent the fastest-growing segment of breast cancer diagnoses. These cases often involve estrogen-sensitive cancers, leading to higher mortality rates among younger patients. While traditional screening guidelines typically focus on women 40 and older, the changing demographics of breast cancer demand that we rethink our approach to early detection, especially since traditional mammography can miss abnormalities in dense breast tissue - which is more common in younger women. At Bexa, we're seeing this shift firsthand through our FDA-cleared screening technology, which is designed to be effective for women of all ages and breast tissue types, but the key takeaway for healthcare professionals is clear: we need to expand our thinking about who needs breast cancer screening and how we can make it more accessible to younger populations. https://lnkd.in/g8yKUAHX

As we reflect on 2024, one startling healthcare trend stands out: too many women aren't getting recommended breast screenings, with the fastest-growing segment of breast cancer cases now occurring in women aged 20-30. Looking ahead to 2025, employers need to recognize that traditional workplace health solutions aren't adequately addressing this critical gap. The evolving workplace dynamics of hybrid and remote work have created additional barriers to preventive care access, making it crucial for HR leaders and benefits professionals to rethink how we deliver essential health services to employees. Together, we can revolutionize early detection and create a future where every woman has access to the preventive care she needs.

Many people don't realize what happens after an abnormal mammogram result: about 10% of screened women require additional testing, and a percentage of those women need a biopsy. However, 60-70% of women who get a biopsy are found to have no cancer. This cycle of callbacks, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, and potential biopsies creates significant anxiety and disruption for working women, requiring multiple appointments and time away from work - a key reason why 60% of women don't get screenings as prescribed. Understanding these challenges is crucial for developing workplace wellness programs like Bexa that prioritize both early detection and employee experience through solutions that can provide immediate results and reduce unnecessary follow-up appointments. https://lnkd.in/gXh8GsdW

As we wrap up 2024, I've been reflecting on one of my go-to business books - Peter Thiel's "Zero to One" and his message about creating something entirely new rather than copying what works. When looking at women's preventive care, we've mostly been iterating on the same solutions from the 1960s, leading to a system where 60-80% of women still don't get regular breast cancer screenings, despite having health insurance. In the book, Thiel says breakthrough innovations come from questioning basic assumptions - and in healthcare, maybe it's time to challenge the assumption that preventive care must be inconvenient, uncomfortable, or inaccessible. As we move into 2025, I'm energized by companies, like Bexa, that are optimizing pathways to early detection, potentially saving both lives and healthcare dollars through earlier intervention. Here's to creating something new, not just making incremental improvements to what's broken. #healthequity #socialdeterminantsofhealth #earlydetection #affordability #access #paradigmshift #womenshealth
