Advancing equity and health for present and future generations
About us
The Big Cities Health Coalition (BCHC) is a forum for the leaders of America’s largest metropolitan health departments to exchange strategies and jointly address issues to promote and protect the health and safety of the more than 61 million people they serve. Together, these public health officials directly affect the health and well-being of one in five Americans. BCHC fosters collaboration, partnership, advocacy, and best practices among member health departments. The Coalition helps member cities develop and share programs based on proven models and best practices. BCHC also provides a unified voice on policy matters primarily at the national level. The Coalition is designed to foster strong connections between major metropolitan health departments to amplify city voices on shared policy issues, provide rapid expertise and support on complex issues, and conserve resources by sharing best practices and other vital tools. VISION Healthy, more equitable communities through big city innovation and leadership. MISSION Advancing equity and health for present and future generations.

State and city health officials rely on CDC notices to make decisions for their communities, such as when to ramp up flu testing or which disease symptoms to keep an eye out for. While much of that information can be delayed a few days, the Trump Administration does need a plan for disseminating more pressing public health information, especially in relation to the bird flu outbreak. In the past year, H5N1 has affected dozens of animal species and more than 35 million wild and commercial birds, resulting in soaring egg prices. It has also infected at least 67 people; the country recorded its first bird-flu-related human death in December. “Can something like the bird flu turn on a dime in 10 days?” our executive director Chrissie Juliano told the New York Times. “Yes. I would hope that if those signals are seen at the federal level, information is going to get out.” Find a link to the full story in the comments.

Was a pleausre for Big Cities Health Coalition to partner with Giridhar Mallya, Erika Sward, and David Margolius to talk to media about this important proposed rule. Thanks Avenel Joseph for raising it up here!
For decades, tobacco companies have manipulated the amount of nicotine in cigarettes and other tobacco products, intentionally addicting generation after generation of children. With the FDA’s proposed rule, our country finally has the opportunity to stand up and say: no more. Despite substantial progress in lowering smoking rates since the 1960s, tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, while nicotine addiction preys upon young people’s brain development and growth. Studies estimate that lowering nicotine levels would lower smoking rates significantly, saving millions of lives and freeing individuals and families nationwide from the poisonous grip of the tobacco industry. The tobacco industry will stop at nothing to block this proposal and maintain their profits at the expense of people’s health. The public comment period offers people across the country the opportunity to counter tobacco industry lies and share their hopes for a healthier future. We strongly urge the incoming Administration to support this effort and implement a final rule as quickly as possible. https://lnkd.in/eNBTqcjy

As Cleveland health director David Margolius noted about this announcement: “Housing is health.” What a great way to repurpose a former health center into housing that continues to serve people in the community who need it most.
The City of Cleveland has selected Pennrose, LLC to redevelop the McCafferty Health Center site into a 72-unit senior affordable housing complex with space for nonprofits! This project addresses the growing need for affordable housing in Ohio City and aligns with the Cleveland 2030 Housing Equity Plan. Learn More: https://lnkd.in/eWMmymUe

The wildfires in Los Angeles are a stark and heartbreaking reminder of the potentially devastating impact of weather-related emergencies. These are clearly public health events as well as ones that require the response of those from other sectors - such as the firefighters who are risking their lives, the public safety officials, emergency medical personnel, social service providers, health care clinicians, emergency housing personnel, etc., etc. The employees of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health led by the skilled and dedicated Barbara Ferrer, PhD, are unsung heroes. They are on the frontlines, assisting those in need or at risk, providing invaluable communications and working to address the full range of health issues which include the dangerous air quality, the health needs of those in temporary shelters, the behavioral health stresses as well as the immediate dangers associated with the fire itself. Here is an example of their work: https://lnkd.in/e7kYEuzF and https://lnkd.in/eBNbzq9E The California Department of Public Health is also doing outstanding work. Its employees, led by newly appointed (but long-time terrific public health leader) Erica Pan, MD. This website illustrates their work: https://lnkd.in/eZhYsEy4 As is often the case, the work of public health personnel don't receive attention and support when an emergency hits. But they are invaluable. Join our #VitalTalks event this Tuesday, January 14. Across the U.S. the crises of homelessness, drug overdose and mental illness are more visible than ever. At our event in New York, hear public health leaders discuss evidence-based solutions to build healthier, more equitable communities. Register to attend here: https://lnkd.in/e-eH3pE7 You'll hear from: - Daliah Heller, Vice President, Drug Use Initiatives, Vital Strategies - Marisol Bello, Executive Director, Housing Narrative Lab - Chrissie Juliano, Executive Director, Big Cities Health Coalition - Insha Rahman, Vice President for Advocacy & Partnerships, Vera Institute of Justice
