Coastal restoration in the Western Long Island Sound isn’t new—NYC Department of Parks & Recreation has been at it for two decades in the making alongside other passionate advocates and partners who understood the value of our shared #NYCWaterfront. It all began before Billion Oyster Project, when NYC Parks and local community members noticed wild oysters were repopulating in the area. “Our objective is to monitor and restore ecosystems, and oysters are a really important historical part of that ecosystem,” says Rebecca Swadek, Director of Wetlands Management at NYC Parks. Since 2008, NYC Parks has restored 160+ acres of wetlands, playing a key role in safeguarding NYC’s 520 miles of shoreline in addition to our beloved parks. 🙏 🔗 Read the full blog on last year's Wild Oyster Surveys and the foundational research conducted by our partners: https://lnkd.in/e5XqiYsp #NYC #NYCParks #OysterRestoration

Restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives
About us
Billion Oyster Project is a nonprofit restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. Oyster reefs have the power to transform NY Harbor. They provide habitat for hundreds of marine species, filter water, and can help shield NYC shorelines from storm damage. Since its founding in 2014, Billion Oyster Project has reintroduced 122 million oysters, engaging 8,000+ students, 15,000+ volunteers, and 70+ NYC restaurant partners. The project’s hands-on science and restoration curriculum is taught at 70+ schools across the city. The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School, a maritime high-school located on Governors Island, is the flagship school of the Billion Oyster Project. Harbor School students contribute to Billion Oyster Project as part of their Career and Technical Education (CTE) experience—growing oysters, designing and building oyster reef structures, diving to monitor reefs, operating boats, performing marine biology research, and more. We’re not just putting oyster reefs in New York Harbor. We’re supporting the restoration of an ecosystem.” – Thay-Ling Moya Pérez, Billion Oyster Project Restoration Project Manager That ecosystem includes #wildoysters and every one of us. Our work in the Western Long Island Sound, supported by local partners (below) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, is proof that we need one another to restore New York Harbor back to health. Surveying these wild populations in Queens and the Bronx through collaborations with local advocates and volunteers is the only road to fully understanding #NYHarbor and fully restoring it. "We need nature-based solutions like oyster restoration to improve the resilience of our coastal city. But we cannot do it alone." said Carolyn Khoury, our Director of Restoration, last week in a panel discussion on resilience at the #UN! Carolyn joined global leaders, including Ms. Vasiti Soko (Tetra Tech), Ms. Angelique Pouponneau (WIOMSA - Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association), and Dr. Ellen Ward (The Pew Charitable Trusts) on "Think Resilience Dialogue IX: Ocean Resilience in a Changing World" for a deep dive into acidification, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss, and the solutions in tech, regional collaboration, governance strategies, and community-driven work we're putting into practice. "Billion Oyster Project aims to engage a million people and reintroduce 1 billion oysters to the harbor by 2035 because we believe this is the baseline needed to get us to a point where we can jumpstart real change, effective change in the estuary, and we cannot do it without people. There's not a single oyster that goes in the harbor that is not done without the support of a lot of people." said Carolyn. We're so proud of Carolyn for championing our work and honored to be at the table! Many thanks to United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and Group of Friends for Disaster Risk Reduction for making the space for these important discussions. #BillionOysterProject #OceanResilience #ClimateAction #CoastalConservation #SustainableFutures #GlobalSolutions

Strong partnerships fuel environmental progress. For 4 years, @OpenWater has been a dedicated supporter of Billion Oyster Project, donating water for our volunteer events and major celebrations like the Billion Oyster Party. This holiday season, they’re making an even bigger impact by matching donations before the New Year. Together, we’re making waves for a sustainable future. Help us make our final match this giving season before the year ends! 🙏 🔗 https://lnkd.in/etpT8Fbe #CorporateSocialResponsibility #WaterForGood #PartnershipInAction
