Biodiversity Credit Alliance
Non-profit Organizations
A new market in nature credits needs the best start possible.
About us
The Biodiversity Credit Alliance (BCA) exists to provide guidance for the establishment of a credible and scalable market that stands up to the scrutiny of multiple stakeholders. Key among them are Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities at the frontline of the biodiversity crisis. Together we’re working to ensure strong foundations and principles exist and can be applied by all market participants going forward. BCA is a voluntary international alliance that brings together diverse stakeholders to support the realisation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, in particular Targets 19(c) and (d), which “encourage the private sector to invest in biodiversity” utilising, amongst others “biodiversity credits … with social safeguards.” Our mission is twofold: 1. Help steer the development of a voluntary biodiversity credit market by building a framework of high-level, science-based principles. 2. Provide guidance and encourage best practice for market participants on the application of these principles, empowering them to achieve and maintain equitable, high quality transactions that meet strict integrity criteria.

🌿The 15th BCA Forum meeting was held on Thursday, November 14th, featuring a presentation from Oliver Bolton, the CEO and co-founder of Earthly. Their voluntary biodiversity credits scheme is based on the methodology developed for the UK's Biodiversity Net Gain policy, and the first batch of credits from their project with the South Downs National Park were recently purchased. BNG units are broken down into smaller areas of nine square meters, which must be secured for 30 years. Earthly uses 106 indicators spread out across carbon, biodiversity and social benefits to allow carbon and nature-based projects to be evaluated and show their potential to deliver on biodiversity and social impact goals as well as carbon. 📢BCA Forum meetings are held every six weeks and feature updates from the Secretariat, Communities Advisory Panel (CAP) and Working Groups, as well as sharings from Forum members about their work and insights into the biodiversity credit landscape. 👉Interested in taking part? 📢𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗽: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀: 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀, 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 On Friday at #COP16, BCA had the pleasure of co-organizing a panel on metrics, measurement and comparability in the beautifully designed pavilion by CAF -banco de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe-. In opening remarks, CAF representative Ignacio Lorenzo Arana emphasized CAF's support for the development of nature markets and biodiversity credits as an important mechanism for sustainable development. CAF is a BCA Forum member, and we look forward to working together in the future! Here are some key insights from the panel: 🧩𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 Panelists shared about how measuring biodiversity involves navigating multiple different metrics across different ecosystems, ranging from assessing restoration in marine ecosystems by SeaTrees, to protection of jaguar habitat in the Pantanal by ERA - Ecosystem Regeneration Associates, which makes establishing a level of standardization challenging. While designing projects, it is important to consider which metrics are used and how those might align with the purpose of the project. 💻𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘁𝘆 Given the complexity of measuring biodiversity, having a data ecosystem to manage different streams of information is crucial to the success of the market. Here, Nathalie Whitaker of Toha Network emphasized the importance of Indigenous Peoples and local communities having sovereignty over their data. 🌿𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀 While standardization in the market around a unit might be a challenge, we still need to be able to communicate about credits in a standardized way. To that end, the BCA has been developing a discussion paper on a comparability framework for biodiversity credits, which will be released soon. Keep your eyes on this space! A recording of this event will be made available soon. Thank you to our panelists and moderator: Richard Field, University of Nottingham; Orion McCarthy, SeaTrees; Hannah Simmons, ERA - Ecosystem Regeneration Associates; Nathalie Whitaker, Toha Network; Josh Brann, Biodiversity Credit Alliance
