A few weeks ago, The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) had to evacuate its headquarters in Washington D.C. after someone found a suspicious package. After an investigation by the police department, the package was deemed safe, however, this caused not only a disruption to operations at the headquarters, but also forced local road closures. Recently, a marine corps veteran plead guilty to making ricin at his home in West Virginia out of "curiosity." While a federal investigation concluded he had no intent to harm others, this incident highlights how simple it is for threat actors to gain access to materials to create dangerous biological and chemical weapons. The local fire department's hazardous materials team tested the substance and within two hours, they concluded it was not dangerous.
