About us

Soil organisms play a crucial role in many of the processes that occur in soil, which are directly linked to the provision of ecosystem services. While it's clear that soil organisms are essential for providing multiple ecosystem services, we still need to explore the relationships between specific soil organisms and the provision of essential ecosystem services across various types of land use. In addition, there is a lack of information on how nutrient cycling, pollution prevention, water infiltration/retention, productivity, soil structure, and soil biodiversity are related to different land uses. Using a statistical approach with cutting-edge elements from AI, such as statistical learning and machine learning algorithms, BIOservicES will establish the relationship between soil organisms, and their multiple uses. The primary goal of BIOservicES is to comprehend the connection between various soil organisms such as viruses, bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, nematodes, microarthropods, earthworms, isopods, millipedes, insects, and spiders, and how they contribute to the delivery of multiple soil ecosystem functions and services at different scales, taking into account different land uses and climate change. The project seeks to identify the pressures and drivers affecting soil organisms and their services, perform an economic valuation of their contribution to the ecosystem, and develop decision-support tools and models that can help design climate-resilient management practices and monitoring, conservation, and restoration programs. The 60-month project, funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe program, will involve 22 partners from 11 countries with very different profiles (universities, small and medium-sized enterprises, consultancies, farmers, and NGOs, among others).

  • 🌍 World Soil Day: Caring for the Earth's Foundation 🌱 This December 5th, we celebrate World Soil Day—a reminder of soil's critical role in sustaining life, ecosystems, and industries. Soil isn’t just dirt; it’s the foundation of food security, climate resilience, and biodiversity. This year’s theme, "Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage," emphasizes: ✔ Accurate Data: Essential for informed agricultural and land-use decisions. ✔ Sustainable Practices: Key to combating land degradation and ensuring productivity. ✔ Global Collaboration: Collective action to protect this vital resource. At BIOservicES, we are committed to advancing soil health through innovative research on soil organisms, their ecosystem functions, and sustainable management practices. By creating tools and indicators for climate-resilient strategies, we aim to support a future where healthy soils benefit people, the planet, and businesses alike. Let’s champion soil health together—because the ground beneath our feet deserves our attention. 🌟 #WorldSoilDay #SustainableFuture #SoilHealth #BIOservicES

  • During the recent BIOservicES #GeneralAssembly meeting, our hosts at the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL organized a tour for participants, showcasing the Alpine experimental sites and research activities in the natural landscapes of Trin and Bonaduz. Highlights of the tour included: 🌱 Semi-natural land use and a closer look at the rain-out shelters and open-top chambers used in grassland experiments. 🌾 Bonaduz wetland, where ongoing studies delve into wetland ecosystems and biodiversity. 🌲 Forest pastures, highlighting the interactions between forestry, agriculture, and biodiversity management. Experiences like this remind us why collaboration and knowledge-sharing across projects are so essential. Understanding research in its environmental context not only enriches our perspective but also strengthens our commitment to sustainable solutions. #BIOservicES #Biodiversity #EcosystemServices #SoilHealth

  • 🌱 Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange: The Keys to Success in Research and Innovation 🤝 Last month, during the General Assembly meeting, we had the privilege of participating in a dedicated session on "Collaboration and synergies with other projects". It was an inspiring showcase of innovative efforts from across the soil biodiversity and ecosystem services research landscape. Together with representatives from SOB4ESSoil Health BenchmarksSOILGUARDExcalibur H2020SoildiverAgroInBestSoil, and the MRV4SOC project, we emphasized the power of collaboration and the synergies that arise when we work together toward common goals. At BIOServices, we strongly believe that knowledge exchange and building bridges between projects are essential to achieving impactful, sustainable outcomes. By fostering open dialogue and sharing expertise, we unlock the potential for meaningful innovations in soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. 🌍✨ #BIOservicES #KnowledgeExchange #SoilBiodiversity

🌎🔥 Each unusual meteorological event serves as a critical reminder that our planet is asserting its need for urgent attention. In this regard, the International Day Against Climate Change serves as a wake-up call for the intensifying impacts of global warming, which are clearer and clearer mainly through the season creep. 🙌 🇪🇺 To show our commitment to environmental health, we are actively involved in two European projects focused on soil protection and restoration, reflecting our dedication to sustainable solutions. 🌿 InBestSoil's goal is to develop an economic valuation system of the ecosystem services provided by healthy soil, assess the impacts of soil interventions, and incorporate this information into business models and incentives. It encourages public and private organizations to invest in soil health and create products, services, and value chains that are less harmful to the soil. 🌱 BIOservicES aims to quantify the scaling potential and impacts of soil sustainability innovations, recognising the importance of private investment and institutional arrangements in soil health conservation. The project will assign monetary values to marketed and non-marketed ecosystem services associated with soil organisms. This approach aims to overcome barriers to transitioning towards sustainable land management reliant on healthy soils with high biodiversity. We can all make our do-good part for a healthier planet and a better climate! 💚 #ClimateChange #GlobalWarming #ClimateAction #ClimateChangeAwareness #InBestSoil #BIOservicES #JuneCom #MakeItSummer
