The 2024 State of Startups report highlights an interesting shift in the time between funding rounds. While the time between venture rounds has generally increased across the U.S., the Southeast bucks the trend. Since 2020, Southeast-based follow-on rounds have maintained a consistent pace, while other leading investment regions sped up between 2020 and 2022. Since then, those regions have been forced to slow – putting their pace well behind Southeast-based investors. The trend reinforces the Southeast's maturation as a competitive startup ecosystem and reflects its distinct and disciplined investment philosophy. Unlike other markets that chase fast-paced cycles, Southeast investors remain deliberate. They prioritize smaller initial checks, waiting for companies to demonstrate value and sustainability before committing to follow-on rounds. The Southeast’s restrained time between rounds is a hallmark of the region's resilience. As the broader venture environment adapts to more expensive capital, the Southeast's steady, fundamentals-driven approach has positioned it as a healthy and competitive market for startups. 📍 Takeaway for Founders The quicker reinvestment cycles in 2023 and 2024 present opportunities for earlier-stage companies to secure follow-on funding. As the region's ecosystem has matured, startups with strong fundamentals and sustainable growth can now more reliably attract capital, offering a more supportive environment for scaling businesses. If you're a startup founder, this is (another!) sage post from BIP Capital General Partner and Chief Performance Engineering Officer, Christy Johnson. The startup environment is challenging. Only 10% survive, and even fewer thrive. Those that do have good innovation, good timing, and good execution. They also know that a solid investor pitch answers a small number of critical questions. 1️⃣ Is the market ready?   2️⃣ Are you the leader who can scale and succeed?   3️⃣ Does your product solve a critical problem?   4️⃣ Will this generate outsized returns?  Answering these questions requires specificity, not just storytelling. ✔ Focus on market demand with data-driven insights.   ✔ Highlight measurable traction—revenue, growth, or partnerships.   ✔ Showcase your leadership and team-building skills.   ✔ Map a clear plan for scaling and ROI.  💡 TL:DR – Your product might get you in the door. It takes execution, timing, and vision to seal the deal. #Startups #FounderTips #PitchDeck #VentureCapital #StartupFunding #MarketFit #Entrepreneurship #BIPVentures

Helping Companies Unlock Growth and Build Smarter, Scalable Businesses.

You’ve built a beautiful pitch deck that highlights your product’s brilliance, packed with charts and features. You feel you are now ready to talk to investors and believe your product's capabilities will open doors and secure checks. It won't. In reality, most investors ask four critical questions: 1. Is this the right time, size and conditions for this market? 2. Can this founder build a team, scale the business efficiently and be a good partner in navigating that process? 3.   Is the product solving a problem that prospects are desperate to solve? 4. Will this opportunity yield outsized returns? If you fail to answer these questions, no amount of product innovation can overcome it. ________________________________________ 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? Research shows that more than 90% of startups fail because of poor market timing or weak execution—not because the product wasn’t “good enough.” Yet entrepreneurs often overlook these factors in their funding strategy. Instead of focusing on market fit, traction, and team dynamics, they double down on features and potential. Investors aren’t looking for just potential; they’re looking for proof. ________________________________________ 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁. If you want funding, focus less on what your product does and more on why it’s primed for success. Here’s some suggestions: • Start with the market: Show how demand is rising and how your product fits perfectly into current trends. Use data, not hope. • Show traction: Highlight metrics that matter—revenues, user growth, partnerships. Provide evidence of progress. • Sell yourself: Investors bet on people. Demonstrate how your background, experience, and determination make you the right person for this venture. • Paint the path to scale: Lay out a clear, compelling roadmap for growth. How will you turn $1 today into $10 tomorrow? ________________________________________ 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: Your idea gets you in the room. Your execution, timing, and story keep you there. Want to stand out to investors? Convince them on the future—and your ability to get there. Because at the end of the day, that’s what funding is all about.

In recent years, the private capital landscape has diversified, creating new opportunities for growth beyond traditional private equity.
