I am sad to learn of Dr. Clifton Wharton’s passing. I’m grateful I had the chance to meet him. He was a true pioneer in every sense of the word. He excelled at the highest levels of foreign policy, academia, and corporate America. He was a man of many firsts, including: - The first Black person to receive a degree from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) (my alma mater 🙂) - The first Black person to receive a PhD in economics from University of Chicago. - The first Black president of a major research university (Michigan State University) - The first Black CEO of a Fortune 500 company (TIAA) - The first Black US Deputy Secretary of State (U.S. Department of State)   He worked tirelessly to ensure that diversity and inclusion were prioritized in every institution he led. We are eternally grateful for his service and may his legacy continue to inspire generations of leaders to come.

As a proud member of Black Professionals in International Affairs - BPIA I’m thrilled to share the Madam Ambassador Girls International Affairs Exposure Program hosted by BPIA in partnership with the Arlington (VA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. This interactive and exploratory multi-day program is designed for girls aged 13-21 based in the Alexandria and Arlington, VA, areas.
