About us
BDO is the world’s largest and most comprehensive online health resource specifically targeted to African Americans. As much as we’d love for healthcare to be one-size-fits-all, the reality is that this is not the case – today’s Black community has higher incidences of just about every major disease and condition out there, as well as shorter life spans. BDO understands that the uniqueness of Black culture - our heritage and our traditions - plays a role in our health. We also understand that there's a lot of mistrust of the healthcare system. That mistrust, combined with all the contradictory information in the media today, makes it difficult to truly feel in control of your health, and your life. But BDO gives you access to innovative new approaches to the health information you need in everyday language – so you can break through the disparities, gain control and live your life to its fullest. Guided by the leading physicians, BDO provides essential, but difficult to find, health resources for you and your family, including free referrals to the top Black physicians and health articles that focus on both culturally accurate content, as well as general health topics (yes, Blacks suffer from conditions like diabetes more, but they can break an arm, too). Let us help you see how good it feels to be in control of living a healthier, happier life!

Recently, CBS Evening News’ Eye on America spotlighted a challenge that Meharrians know all too well: the urgent need for more Black health care professionals. While the nation may just be awakening to this critical issue, it has been the foundation of Meharry Medical College’s mission since 1876. This need defines why Meharry exists—to address health disparities driven by a lack of representation in health care and ensure that every community, particularly the underserved, has access to compassionate, culturally competent care. Dr. Dontal Johnson’s story—a Meharry alumnus and current faculty member—highlights the transformative power of representation, much like so many others. Growing up, he never saw a Black doctor, an experience that inspired his journey to becoming one, much like the path taken by many other Black health care providers, myself included. His experience reflects the profound impact representation has in shaping lives, transforming communities and inspiring the next generation of leaders. Thanks to the historic $175 million gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies and additional contributions, Meharry is better positioned to continue its legacy of producing health care providers who have a passion for serving the underserved and advancing health equity If you have an opportunity, please take the time to watch this impactful segment and reflect on the essential role historically Black medical schools play in our nation’s health care ecosystem. This holiday season, I implore you to take a moment to express gratitude for those who dedicate their careers to serving underserved communities and for the institutions that educate and inspire these compassionate health care providers. https://lnkd.in/gDSe_aQY

This Thanksgiving, I’d like to take a moment to publicly acknowledge someone who was truly an angel to me and my family. His name is Angelo Rivero. In my previous role as Managing Director of MSD #Chile, Angelo was hired to assist to my family with adjusting to a country where we didn’t know the language or the culture. Every day, he was the first and the last person we saw. He was always on-time, pleasant, and very respectful. As time passed, he slowly became more open, and we got to know him better. We learned that Angelo had a tough upbringing, but he persevered. He worked full-time to support his family while attending university to become a teacher. After starting his career teaching, he quickly learned an unfortunate reality that the salary of a teacher is often not enough to support a family. It was during this time he met his girlfriend, who took a leap of faith to move to Chile from South Korea. This job at MSD allowed them to start planning a life together. As my family got more comfortable navigating Chile on their own, Angelo’s role expanded from a driver to more of a personal assistant. This allowed me to spend more time with him, and I noticed a major shift in his motivation to grow both personally and professionally. He became excellent at anticipating issues and coming up with solutions, in addition to asking for and taking on additional responsibilities. I also saw him become more curious, asking very insightful questions about the industry and leadership. He shared with me that the level of responsibility and trust we gave him made him more confident. For all the great stories and pictures shared during our time abroad, there were also many challenging days. When my wife and I both came down with COVID, it was Angelo who stepped in to help us. When my wife’s grandmother had to be hospitalized in Chile, he served as a translator with the doctors. When my wife’s friend was robbed during a lunch, he stepped in to assist with the police. When my home was flooded while I was on a business trip, he went there to salvage what he could and cleaned the home before I arrived. For our highest of highs, lowest of lows, and everything in between, he was there. When my family and I returned to the U.S., Angelo’s role was eliminated. This job had allowed him to get married, buy a car, take care of his family, and start looking towards a future. It has been a few months now and he hasn’t been able to find a new role. If you or someone you know needs an executive assistant, personal assistant, driver, translator, or has an entry level role, please tag them and Angelo. His honesty, work ethic, knowledge, and experience would make him an asset to any organization. #AngelsForAngelo Angelo Rivero, this Thanksgiving and holiday season, my family and I thank you for all you did to take care of us. We would not have made it without you. I would not have made it without you. The girls miss you and can’t wait to see you.

Prostate Cancer Awareness: Start the Dialogue Today 🩺 Black men are twice as likely to die from prostate cancer. Yet, early detection through simple screening like a PSA test can lead to a 96% survival rate. 🏈 Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe knows the impact of this disease firsthand.
