The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has released its third temporary extension to the full set of COVID-era flexibilities for prescribing controlled substances via telemedicine. These flexibilities, initially set to expire at the end of 2024, have been extended to December 31, 2025. Accordingly, if certain conditions are met, providers may continue to prescribe Schedule II-V controlled substances via telemedicine without having conducted an in-person evaluation of the patient. Further, providers will not be required to obtain additional registration with the DEA in additional states where the dispensing occurs, as long as they maintain a DEA registration in at least one state.
