Meet Frank Le Cocq, VFX Artist on Overwatch 2 and 2020 WoW Student Art Contest Winner 🏆 “My journey to Blizzard started during my junior year of college. I was originally interested in doing 3D environment art until I took a VFX class, which completely changed everything. At my school, we only had one VFX class, so I had to audit it multiple times and work on VFX projects in my free time to hone my skills. I entered the WoW Student Art Contest because I felt it was a perfect tie into my senior VFX project, and it was an awesome learning opportunity for me! It provided me with extra motivation to really polish and make an awesome piece of work I would be proud of. … and I actually won! Whoa! It led me to work with an outsourcing studio where I learned so much. Then I got a job offer on Overwatch! One of my favorite projects so far has been helping to create Overwatch 2’s first openly non-binary hero, Venture. I’ve learned so much from my talented peers since joining Blizzard. It’s really collaborative here. From the animators to the sound team or just connecting with colleagues I don’t work closely with… it all creates this really healthy work culture. For anyone looking to get into a gaming career, I’d say be open-minded and try out different areas. You never know which one could fuel the passion that takes you to far places! And for artists in particular, check out the WoW Student Art Contest… it started everything for me!” Enter the WoW Student Art Contest today! 👉 https://bit.ly/3V0nW8W

Meet Peter Burroughs, Prop Artist and 2020 Environment Art WoW Student Art Contest Winner 🏆 “I've long been a fan of Blizzard's games, and my dream of working here started when I was in college at Michigan State University. An alumna who’d previously won the WoW Student Art Contest, Marie Lazar, visited my class and showed us that working for Blizzard was actually an attainable goal. I studied game development for my undergrad, then did freelance art while continuing my education. Marie and my instructors encouraged me to enter the WoW competition, and with the skills I'd gained over the years, I felt the time was right to give it my best shot. I’ll always remember the moment I got the call saying I’d won; I was eating a PB&J sandwich and trying to figure out the next step in my life when my phone rang and everything changed. On top of all the amazing feedback and swag, I was offered an internship at Blizzard over the summer, and I feel very lucky that I was able to stick around! Now I’ve worked on so many great projects here at Blizzard, and the Arathor kit for The War Within expansion has to be my favorite so far. I even had the pleasure of making the biggest book in the game -- one of their holy tomes is larger than a player! But as cool as those projects are, it’s really the amazing people on the WoW team that make this place so special: we lift each other to new heights that would be impossible alone. The trust, kindness, and feedback from my team and the community have helped me make my best work ever here at Blizzard. If you’re looking to join the gaming industry, I recommend focusing your portfolio. Breadth of knowledge is good, but you’ll stand out more if you’re excellent in at least one area (like hand-painted stylized prop art!). Also, don’t build motivation, build habits. Process and discipline always win out over waiting for inspiration to strike. Finally, you never know how close you are to your next opportunity, so never give up!” Enter the WoW Student Art Contest today! https://bit.ly/3V0nW8W 🎨 📷 Kelly Victoria
