Discover Costa Maya: A Hidden Gem on Your Cruise Adventure When planning a cruise with Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, sometimes unexpected changes can lead to exciting new adventures. Such was the case when our original ports of call were switched due to some port closures, giving us the opportunity to explore the beautiful Costa Maya. Situated in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan peninsula and bordered by the Caribbean Sea, Costa Maya is a vibrant and expansive port that offers a wealth of activities and amenities for visitors. Arrival at Costa Maya Costa Maya is located near the small fishing village of Mahahual and is south of Cancun. Unlike Cozumel, which is an island, Costa Maya is on the mainland of Mexico. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the sight of one of the larger ports in the Caribbean, known for its expansive facilities. As you disembark, remember to bring your ship key card, photo ID, and any essentials like cash, credit cards, and towels from the ship. Fresh produce is not allowed to be taken off the ship. Exploring the Port Once inside the port, you will find a variety of amenities including an ATM, bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and a taxi stand. There are also golf carts available for rent to explore the local area. If you haven’t planned any excursions in advance, there is a last-minute tour desk where you can book activities right at the port. For those who prefer spontaneous adventures, the port itself offers plenty to do. You can purchase a port pass, which includes admission to the on-site aviary with tropical birds, the Kakaw Chocolate Factory, the tequila museum, and three complimentary house drinks. This is a great option if you prefer to stay close and explore the port. Activities and Excursions Costa Maya offers a variety of excursions that cater to different interests. Popular options include: Chacchoben Mayan Ruins Tour: Located about 50-60 minutes from the port, this tour takes you to the fascinating ruins of Chacchoben and typically lasts around four hours. Seven Colors Lagoon: This freshwater lagoon excursion includes transportation, food, and drink, providing a relaxing and scenic experience. Dolphin Discovery: Located right at the port, this excursion allows you to interact with dolphins. It’s advisable to book in advance due to its popularity. Mayan Wellness Retreat: Enjoy a spa experience that can be combined with other activities at the port. For those looking to spend a day at the beach, there are several beach clubs available as privately booked excursions. One of the most popular is Maya Chan Beach. Maya Chan Beach: A Perfect Day in Paradise Maya Chan Beach is a private beach resort located in Mahahual. It offers a beach-front location with loungers, games, a pool, clean restrooms, Wi-Fi, several beach bars, and more. Transportation to and from the port is included and organized, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

Detailed Cabin Selection Tips To Avoid Sea Sickeness: Midship Cabins: Horizontal Midship: Opt for cabins located between the front and rear (bow and stern) of the ship. The middle part of the ship is the least affected by the ship's pitching and rolling. Vertical Midship: Choose a cabin that is vertically midship, meaning it is neither too high nor too low. The central location balances out the ship's movements. Lower Decks: Proximity to Waterline: Cabins closer to the waterline experience less up-and-down motion (pitch) compared to those on higher decks. While you may not have the same panoramic views as higher decks, the stability is worth the trade-off. Noise Consideration: Be mindful that some lower deck cabins near the engine room or anchor may experience more noise. Check the ship's layout to avoid these areas. Window or Balcony Cabins: Natural Light: Having access to natural light can help alleviate the feeling of confinement and provide a visual reference to the horizon, which helps mitigate seasickness. Fresh Air: Balconies offer a chance to get fresh air without leaving your cabin, which can be soothing if you start feeling unwell. Avoid Forward and Aft Cabins: Forward (Bow) Cabins: These cabins are more prone to experiencing the up-and-down motion of the ship, which can exacerbate seasickness. Aft (Stern) Cabins: While often quieter and offering scenic views, aft cabins can also experience more vibration and motion, especially in rough seas. Additional Tips for Minimizing Seasickness: Cabin Location Near Stabilizers: Stabilizers: Some modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers designed to reduce side-to-side rolling. Cabins located near the ship's midship stabilizers will benefit the most from this technology. Ship Size and Route: Larger Ships: Larger ships tend to be more stable than smaller ones due to their size and advanced stabilizing technologies. Route Consideration: Choose itineraries known for calmer waters, such as the Caribbean or Mediterranean, over routes with historically rougher seas, like the North Atlantic or around Cape Horn. Travel During Calm Seasons: Seasonal Weather Patterns: Research the best times to cruise specific regions. For example, the Caribbean hurricane season runs from June to November, so consider booking outside of these months for smoother sailing. Prepare with Medication: Over-the-Counter Options: Bring over-the-counter seasickness medications such as Dramamine or Bonine. These can be taken before the cruise or at the onset of symptoms. Natural Remedies: Consider natural remedies like ginger tablets or acupressure wristbands (Sea-Bands) that some travelers find effective. Diet and Hydration: Light Meals: Eat light meals, and avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods that can aggravate nausea. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, but avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration and worsen seasickness.
