Gabrielle has a history of turning can’t into can. At six months old, Gabby was diagnosed with a rare developmental birth defect that causes clefts in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain. Doctors told Gabby’s parents she likely would not be able to feed herself, read, or do many other "normal" things. Gabby is unable to walk or use her left side, but otherwise, she has defied every odd. https://lnkd.in/eETx_Z5G #MissionMoment #Sories #BDIEmpowers #Disability

In 2023, nearly 4 in 10 U.S. households with an adult who couldn’t work because of a disability struggled with food insecurity. For households where an adult had a disability but was working, nearly 3 in 10 faced food insecurity. In contrast, only about 1 in 10 households without an adult with a disability experienced food insecurity, according to the USDA. Today, Bobby Dodd Institute's executive team volunteered with the Atlanta Community Food Bank to help sort items that will be distributed to families in need. The team had the opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder with several other local businesses and organizations. Collectively, we sorted almost 18,000 pounds of food, or 14,902 meals. 🥗 Additionally, our incredible BDI staff hosted a month-long food drive. Thanks to their efforts, we collected nearly 300 pounds of food, including 218 pounds directly donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank—providing 181 meals for local families. Building a stronger, self-sufficient community doesn’t happen overnight. It takes teamwork and small, consistent steps to create lasting change. Want to get involved? Volunteering is a rewarding way to serve your community. If you’re looking to make an impact, consider opportunities with the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Here at BDI, we also offer some great volunteer initiatives #EndHunger #FightFoodInsecurity #Volunteering #BDIEmpowers

How Does Trauma Affect Us and How Can We Cope With It? For some, it’s an isolated event that’s quickly forgotten. For others, however, certain traumatic events leave a lasting imprint on the brain and body, shaping how we grow socially and emotionally. Trauma is an event that is perceived as threatening and leaves a person feeling helpless or hopeless. Everyone experiences trauma differently, but children are especially vulnerable. From a social-emotional perspective, trauma impacts how individuals relate to others and manage social situations. 🤝 Physical symptoms of trauma in adulthood can include headaches, stomach issues, chronic pain, numbness, and eating disorders. 🤕 Psychological effects include anxiety, depression, and mood disturbances. 🧠 Trauma can also have severe long-term health effects, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, increased risk of addiction, diabetes, and chronic fatigue. Brandon Printup, Clinical Director for Behavioral Health and Counseling Services at Bobby Dodd Institute (BDI), explores different types of trauma, how to recognize it, and how to support those who’ve experienced severe events in early childhood.
