Giving USA Foundation released their annual report on the state of philanthropy, and while there were some bright spots, the overall trendline of the last few years shows few signs of abating. Overall giving to charities came in at $557B in 2023, up 1.9% (though, in real dollars, a decline of 2.1% given the impacts of inflation). Gifts from individuals continued to lag other categories, reinforcing a recent report by the Fundraising Effectiveness Project which noted that 80% of the decline in donor participation can be attributed to the loss of the small donors who gave $500 or less. Increases in giving from corporations and bequests powered much of the nominal growth. Large donors play an increasingly important role, but ultimately electrifying broad participation is key to accelerate giving growth. Bonterra will be sharing some exciting announcements shortly about how we are using insights from our Cybergrants giving and volunteerism platform and those from our EveryAction, Network For Good, and Social Solutions nonprofit platforms to more easily match donors with doers. Solving this matching problem is at the center of our vision to double philanthropic activity over the next decade.

Parkinson’s Disease affects more than 10 million people worldwide, and while there isn’t a cure yet, medication and lifestyle changes can make an impact on the symptoms. Michelle Hespeler, executive director of Beat Parkinson's Today, arms herself with exercise to fight Parkinson’s. BPD Today offers classes like yoga, weightlifting, and no-contact boxing — each ending with a meditation session. Families and caretakers can attend workshops and trainings to support their loved ones. "These clients taught me about what it means to have a winning mentality,” says Caroline Murray, a trainer at BPD Today. After teaming up with Bonterra, BPD Today raised over $7,000 on its first Giving Tuesday, empowering their teachers, fitness classes, and participants to fight the disease. “For me, Pride represents a time to relish in celebrating our community. It is an opportunity to reflect and appreciate the events that have transpired to get to where we are today and to enjoy feeling especially connected to other members of our community.” — Aron Kaufman, senior data analyst. Part of Aron’s connection to the LGBTQ+ community is his volunteer work with the Hetrick-Martin Institute. They provide free programming for LGBTQIA+ youth year-round, and Aron supports them with meal service. He especially appreciates having positive interactions with the kids. Thank you, Aron, for championing your community and sharing your Pride experience!

Although 84% of donors say they’re more likely to give if a match is offered, it’s estimated that $4-7 billion in matching funds are left on the table each year. While it’s clear that matching gift programs can help boost employee participation and maximize support for nonprofits, many donors still fail to take advantage of this benefit. 3 ways that Bonterra can help you incentivize matching gift programs: https://lnkd.in/eXZneiFb
