We visited Brazil in August 2024. At this time of year in winter we would expect cold, mild weather. We were shocked to see the amount of burnt land from the many fires, there has been a drought and persistently high temperatures for this time of year. The dry air had accumulated a lot of dust from the smoke and dried earth. We were based for most of our trip in Espírito Santo do Pinhal which is where the Costa Café export office is located. Espírito Santo do Pinhal (Pinhal for short) is located close to the border of the state of São Paulo and state of Minas Gerais making it the perfect gateway between the two coffee producing states. Many of the producers in Mogiana we source from each year are based local to Pinhal. We visited them to check in on how their harvests were progressing, which went well but yields were down on previous years due to the smaller screen sizes. The coffee plants are now in the flowering phase, and we are hoping for rain urgently to take the strain off the plants from the prolonged high temperatures. We also visited the dry mill where the coffee is processed for export in a small town called Albertina, just over the border in Minas Gerais. The specialty mill which processes all of our lots for export had recently been relocated there to be consolidated with the full commercial coffee operation.
We will keep you posted on our new crop imports coming soon.
