About us

The Boston Foundation is one of the nation’s first and most impactful community foundations, with $1.9 billion in assets. Partnering with community members, donors, the public sector, businesses and nonprofits, we exist to close the gaps caused by our city’s greatest disparities, to advance economic justice, and to help build a better Boston. We collect data, commission research, share knowledge, develop dynamic programs, fuel new ideas and fund change. Our work informs public policy, catalyzes conversations and advocates not only for change, but for repair of the historical harms of inequity. Ultimately, we aim to support, contribute and create well-being and opportunity within our communities. TBF is also one of New England’s largest grantmakers, supporting nonprofits in Greater Boston through our endowment and working closely with our donors to support nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally.

Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, service provider, or advocate, join our Coffee and Conversation on Friday at 9:30 to explore the critical link between parent and child well-being and for a discussion of strategies to support families. Our panel of experts, advocates, and community members will discuss the state of parents' mental health and its impact on the long-term health of children, highlighting research insights, practical approaches for supporting caregivers, and ways to create nurturing community networks. • Nonprofits are at the heart of Greater Boston and the heart of our work. That's why TBF's Community Leadership pathway is grounded in supporting nonprofit leaders and organizations, strengthening relationships and equitable philanthropic practices, valuing collaboration, and investing in community-led grantmaking that aids individuals and families. In our work with infrastructure partners like the Institute for Nonprofit Practice, TBF strives to empower and equip nonprofit leaders so they can meet their missions and strengthen our communities. As many consider supporting nonprofits throughout the giving season and beyond, it is essential that we center the wellbeing of our nonprofit sector as a whole. You by our side. Equity at the center. Thanks to the Institute for Nonprofit Practice and all of the nonprofit leaders who partnered with us for this video series, and our gratitude to EmVision Productions for showcasing this work! • During this season of thanks and giving, we're immensely grateful to our donors who fuel change, driven by their desire to help build more equitable communities and choosing to partner with TBF to strengthen the impact of their giving. It’s truly a privilege to collaborate with each of our donors to support their philanthropic visions. "Powering A Culture of Philanthropy," our 2024 Annual Report, introduces us to several of TBF's donors across the spectrum of our work, and the organizations that inspire them. • This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for the incredible partnerships we have that enable us to improve lives and strengthen communities. Your collaboration powers progress, guides the work we do, and moves Boston. We're thankful to you - our partners in advocacy, convening, fundraising, conducting research, expanding thinking, sharing stories and resources, and co-creating strategic efforts that build a more equitable Greater Boston. We're pleased to highlight some of these partnerships and the collaborative work at the heart of creating a more equitable Boston in a new video series, which we'll share over the coming weeks. Thank you to EmVision Productions for showcasing the work we do collectively in community. You by our side. Equity at the center. From our team at The Boston Foundation, thanks for supporting what we can accomplish together.

  • Reminder to MA nonprofit leaders! Urban Institute urges all nonprofit leaders that received the National Survey of Nonprofit Trends and Impacts 2024 in late October to share your experiences related to programs, workforce, finances, and government engagement. If you received the survey you can tell your nonprofit’s story by completing the survey by December 5. Using this survey data, Urban Institute, with funding from the Barr Foundation, is working to inform a series of publications about Massachusetts nonprofits.

  • November is designated as National Native American Heritage Month and finds many Americans reflecting on the contributions, achievements, sacrifices, culture, and historic and present-day harms committed against Native people in our country. As we pair these acknowledgments with preparations to honor Thanksgiving Day this Thursday and celebrate Native American Heritage Day on Friday, we've compiled information and resources to support our reflection throughout the month, and in the spirit of the season, we're excited to share our latest blog post to learn, reflect, honor, and give thanks together. • "Speakers at the launch said that the expanded initiative wouldn’t have been possible without collaboration between public and private entities. Leaning on a mix of state and philanthropic dollars to combat the state’s skyrocketing home costs, they say, could be one way to eliminate the state’s gaping racial homeownership gap." We are so pleased to have joined with the Massachusetts Housing Partnership, Eastern Bank, and State Street to launch the ONE+ Mortgage Program! This is the first investment by the Racial Wealth Gap Partnership convened by TBF, which brings together more than 40 housing, financial, nonprofit, philanthropic, and civic leaders on this vital issue of making homeownership more affordable for hundreds of Greater Boston families to create and preserve wealth in underserved communities and households of color across the region. The Partnership - with commitments from our members and support from the Commonwealth - has catalyzed more than $11 million in funding for the ONE+ Program, which provides low-to-moderate income first-time home buyers in Massachusetts with an affordable mortgage product, down payment assistance, discounted interest rates, and more. Thank you to our TBF team, the Racial Wealth Gap Partnership members, all the ONE+ partners, and everyone who made this launch possible! Together we can can improve lives and strengthen communities throughout the region. • “The Partnership’s first investment in the ONE+ program will unlock homeownership opportunities for hundreds of Greater Boston families, but it is just the beginning of our growing commitment to expand down payment assistance and create and preserve wealth in underserved communities and households of color through homeownership,” Lee Pelton, TBF President and CEO. Today we celebrated the launch of the Massachusetts Housing Partnership’s new ONE+ program! A mortgage program to help income-eligible first-time homebuyers in 29 MA communities own a home, the ONE+ program is launching with over $11 million in support led by the Commonwealth, Eastern Bank and the Eastern Bank Foundation, and the Boston Foundation’s Racial Wealth Gap Partnership. The ONE+ program is the first grantee of the Racial Wealth Gap Partnership's Down Payment Assistance Program. More about the ONE+ launch: https://bit.ly/3Oo5enI
