As reported by NBC News, the desire for meaningful work, the chance to acquire valuable skills, and the avoidance of overwhelming student debt are leading record numbers to industries eagerly seeking talent. As one student puts it "We can have what others owe." For Colorado's under-resourced high schooler seniors, this is the opportunity to change your life's trajectory. Opening doors to a better world by providing financial support for skills-based and technical education to those in need
About us
At the Bates Philanthropic Initiative (BPI), we firmly believe that everyone deserves access to excellent education, regardless of their circumstances. In Colorado, many gifted yet disadvantaged young people find themselves at a crossroads, torn between fulfilling their basic needs and pursuing an education that can truly change their lives. With over 75% of Colorado jobs requiring some post-secondary training, the urgency is clear: without further education, many face difficulties making a living wage. But there is hope and a path forward! We are dedicated to changing this narrative by providing financial support for skills-based pathways, empowering under-resourced youth to explore a wealth of opportunities. Our mission goes beyond offering scholarships; we understand that transitioning from high school to employment can be overwhelming, as many students confront significant barriers. That’s why we fund nonprofit partners who deliver essential wrap-around services—transportation, language support, mentorship, career counseling, and testing and materials fees—to help students navigate these challenges. Together, we can equip young people with the tools they need to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. Together, let’s open doors for a brighter future!

Celebrating our new partnership with St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation and St. Vrain Valley Schools. This $15,000 grant establishes a fund for micro-grants accessible by teachers to support non-tuition costs for in-need students attending CETC. This grant also expands access to under-resourced students seeking skills in the welding and automotive programs, as well as supporting CETC outreach programs for incoming families. Thank you to the enitre SVVSD team including Hilary Sontag, Brandon Shaffer, Lark Rambo, Dina Perfetti-Deany, ToniJo Niccoli, Ed.S. for making a difference in these young adults lives!

Thank you to Todd Palmer and the team at Watson Mills and Design LLC and Schacht Mill Works Inc for inviting us to attend the American Woodwork Institute tour. Todd’s commitment to the skilled trades goes far beyond making beautiful products. “We’re committed to creating generational change. Big words, but small actions can make a huge difference in our employee’s lives.” #skilledtrades #BPI
