2,000 years ago, a 75-foot wooden ship crawled across the Mediterranean, carrying a mere half-ton of cargo. It needed 30+ people just to survive the trip. Slow. Fragile. Barely making a dent in trade. Now? A 600-foot cargo ship crosses oceans. It hauls 300 tons with just 12 crew members. That’s 600x more cargo at 1/3 of the manpower. This is leverage. Technology didn’t just tweak the system; it redefined it. Ships didn’t get bigger by hiring more sailors—they got smarter. Automation and advanced tools made global trade explode. AI is our modern cargo ship. It amplifies every ounce of effort, transforming industries like education and business from manual, sluggish operations into engines of scale and creativity. It’s not about replacing people. It’s about multiplying impact. AI does for thinking what cargo ships did for trade: less manpower, exponentially more output. The question is simple—are you still using wooden sailboats? Or are you building your cargo ship?

Did you know students are being falsely accused of cheating by AI detectors? These tools, while well-intentioned, are misguided and simply don't work. In trying to preserve "authentic learning", these tools are discouraging genuine student effort and creativity. What's worse? They're disincentivizing students from becoming AI-proficient -> a must in the workforce of the future! The future of education isn't about catching AI users. It's about preparing students to work alongside AI while finding their unique human voice. DM me if you want to learn more about how Breakout Learning is helping educators meet this moment. #Education #AI #HigherEducation #EdTech #TeachingAndLearning

This is a great reminder from Ethan Mollick: you can't detect AI writing. But there's a bigger point: even if you could, why would you? I'm not suggesting it's good for students to use ChatGPT to skip critical thinking. But they ARE using it (wouldn't you?) And if we want them to succeed in the workforce, then we'd better help them learn to use it responsibly and effectively. But here's the truth: in 2025, if the only way we're measuring critical thinking is by assigning students basic write-ups, then we're failing to meet this unprecedented AI moment. Don't get me wrong: writing is an essential skill. As a lifelong story-teller, I know first hand the power of a well-executed missive. Still, if the pedagogical purpose of a write-up is to deepen understanding, encourage critical thinking, and improve communication, I would argue there's a better way. At Breakout Learning, we've created a small-group discussion platform that is moderated and evaluated by AI. Next time, instead of giving your students another write-up, assign them a Breakout discussion module (custom built for your needs!) and get them thinking and talking! You'll know if they did the reading, and they'll love getting airtime they normally don't get in class. The future of #HigherED is not banning #AI from classrooms. It's putting the power of AI in the hands of teachers today, so that students are prepared to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

Reminder for the new semester: you can’t detect AI writing. For example, when esearchers secretly added AI-created the papers to the exam pool: “We found that 94% of our AI submissions were undetected. The grades awarded to our AI submissions were on average half a grade boundary higher than that achieved by real students.” And, of course, automatic AI detectors are not reliable.

Does #AI terrify you? Recently, I reconnected with an old friend of mine who I'd lost touch with. When he asked me what I did for a living, I told him I co-founded an AI Learning company. His response was blunt: "f*@& AI". I get where he's coming from. Like most of us here, he works hard for a living. So either he’s already felt the impact of AI or fears he will soon enough. Change is always scary - especially when it comes fast. But there's something about this moment that feels particularly... existential? The questions are big, the stakes are bigger and the answers are hazy at best, especially through the fog of dubious spokespeople, social media, and disinformation. My father always said, “you can’t believe everything you read.” These days, you can’t even believe what you see with your own two eyes. Even now, I bet some of you are wondering if this post was written by an LLM (spoiler alert: it wasn’t.)   Still, this much is clear: the Era of AI has arrived. Given this reality, there's only one pertinent question: what will you do to prepare for any change that might be coming? For my part, I've embraced #learning. And I hope you will, too. I think you'll find that this new technology can unlock something in you and take you to new heights. And by the way, you're not a luddite for having concerns or being a little scared. That probably just means you're a thoughtful, conscientious human. And that’s a good thing. The AI community needs more folks like you. If you're curious and want to learn more, DM me. I'd love to connect with you and tell you what I've learned on my journey with the incredible team at Breakout Learning. #AIForGood #Learning

  • Have you checked out this AI Landscape Study from EDUCAUSE yet? It’s examining how higher ed institutions are exploring and grappling with AI strategy. Some key points we found interesting: • 95% of institutions agree AI is going to change higher-ed (but how that will happen or what it will look like is still up in the air at many universities) • Leaders are cautiously curious—they know AI has potential but need tools and training that actually work (and don’t feel like extra homework). • Students are hungry for AI skills because, well, their future jobs are demanding them. Many professors and students are acknowledging that AI needs to be developed, and they don’t want to fall behind technology advancements. But concerns about academic integrity and data privacy persist. Another impactful finding from the study — strategists don’t always know what’s going on at other institutions. There’s a lack of community understanding and alignment around how to use and navigate AI technologies. We see this as a wake-up call. AI isn’t just a trend—it’s the future of teaching and learning. We work to make educators empowered by AI, and students engaged by it. So what’s your take? How is your institution creating strategy around AI? https://hubs.li/Q030n4Jm0 #AIinEducation #HigherEd #BreakoutLearning
