Forging strategic partnerships to improve WASH We are delighted to announce a groundbreaking partnership between ourselves and the National Water Supply and Sanitation Council(NWASCO), marking a significant milestone in tackling Zambia's pressing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) challenges. This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underscores the power of collaboration in overcoming the escalating threats to water and sanitation access, exacerbated by the devastating drought. As emphasized by our Country Director, Amanda Mallaghan, effective partnerships among stakeholders are crucial for driving meaningful change in the WASH sector. We are deeply grateful to NWASCO for their commitment to this collaboration, which reflects our shared vision to support interventions that: - Improve WASH Services: Enhance school and institutional WASH services to ensure a healthier environment for students and communities. - Raise Awareness: Educate the public about critical WASH issues, promoting behavioral change and community engagement. - Strengthen Systems: Support system strengthening initiatives to improve the efficiency and sustainability of WASH services. - Document Progress: Record successes, lessons, and challenges to inform future interventions and improve sector performance. - Drought Response: Contribute to sector efforts in drought response, ensuring that WASH services are resilient and adaptable to climate-related challenges. This partnership is a testament to our shared commitment to addressing Zambia's WASH challenges. We look forward to working together to drive meaningful change and improve the lives of Zambian communities. World Toilet Day... What does this day mean to you? November 19th marks World Toilet Day, a global call to action to address the pressing sanitation crisis and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): sanitation for all by 2030. For BORDA Zambia, this is a day to remember, a day to act. And this year, we are delighted to be joining the rest of the world in remembering the important role that toilets play under the theme: Toilets - a place for peace. The 'Blue Flame' Witness the power of sustainable energy in action as the Adastra Primary and Secondary School in Choma harnesses the potential of biogas. A remarkable 'blue flame' burns brightly, fueled by the school's innovative DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System) that converts wastewater from the pupils' ablution block into clean energy. This groundbreaking initiative, part of our #LiveableCities Project, showcases a beacon of eco-friendly innovation, demonstrating how local solutions can transform waste into valuable resources, promoting a healthier environment, and empowering communities. Biogas is a renewable energy source primarily composed of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), with trace gases like hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). Produced by breaking down organic matter—such as manure, sewage, and food waste—in an anaerobic environment, biogas offers a sustainable energy solution to generate heat and electricity. A quick and easy test on the quality of biogas is by observing the color of the flame – the indicator being a ‘blue flame’. A blue flame when burning biogas indicates efficient combustion and high methane content. Methane burns with a clean, blue flame when there is sufficient oxygen, meaning that the gas is fully combusting and producing minimal soot or carbon monoxide. This is a desirable flame color as it shows that the biogas is providing maximum energy output while generating fewer pollutants. #Waste2Energy BORDA - Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Eng. Strengthening OSS & FSM Service Delivery Through Knowledge Exchange: Insights from Zambia’s Leading Commercial Utilities 💧 We are excited to share our Implementing OSS & FSM Knowledge Exchange report! This report presents the outcomes of a knowledge exchange workshop we held in Kabwe with four commercial utilities: Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC), Southern Water Supply and Sanitation Company (SWSC), Lukanga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (LgWSC) and Eastern Water Supply and Sanitation Company (EWSC). Since 2018, Zambia’s commercial utilities have expanded their mandate to include on-site sanitation (OSS) and faecal sludge management (FSM), addressing the entire sanitation chain. While there has been progress, challenges remain in capacity, infrastructure, and operations. These gaps were addressed during our workshop, where the utilities shared experiences and lessons to improve and expand OSS & FSM services. Explore the report for strategies and solutions for safer, more effective sanitation services! 💦 Amanda Mallaghan Eddy Chikuta Teza Nampasa Prince Kapelembe 🚰 Chingeleshi Isaac GMICE Aubrey Simwambi Eng. Today, we celebrated #GlobalHandwashingDay 💧🌍 with a memorable event at Kapwelyomba Primary School alongside pupils from our 10 project schools, our guest of honor the District Education Board Secretary Mr. Ian Miyoba and representatives from National Water Supply and Sanitation Council(NWASCO), Lusaka City Council, the Ministry of Education and NGO WASH Forum Zambia. The day was full of energy and excitement, as pupils expressed themselves through songs, dances, poetry recitals, engaging performances, and a heated debate, all centered around one simple, life-saving practice: handwashing with soap. 🧼 The learners showcased the correct way to wash hands, proving that hand hygiene is not only about staying clean - it’s about protecting their health and future. Mr. Miyoba delivered an inspiring speech, reminding us all that handwashing is a critical step in reducing the spread of diseases, particularly in Zambia, where many children are at risk due to preventable illnesses like diarrhea and respiratory infections. Through the WASH'n'soul project, we are proud to be championing hand hygiene in schools across Lusaka, ensuring that pupils not only know how to wash their hands but understand why it matters. We’re turning these children into hygiene ambassadors, spreading this essential knowledge to their families and communities. 🌍 Join us in spreading the word: Clean hands save lives! 💪💦 BORDA - Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association soulbottles • soulproducts GmbH Viva con Agua Eddy Chikuta Amanda Mallaghan Teza Nampasa Prince Kapelembe 🚰 Ngobi Ronald Giri Khatri Jenniver Zulu Laura Scholz #WASH #WASHnsoul #WaterSanitationHygiene #GHD #GHD2024 #EducationForAll #WaterForAll #Zambia #Lusaka #YouthEmpowerment

Global Handwashing Day is tomorrow! 🫧 Tomorrow, we join the world in celebrating Global Handwashing Day, a powerful reminder of the importance of clean hands for healthy communities. At BORDA Zambia, we are committed to promoting hand hygiene, ensuring that pupils not only have access to clean water and proper sanitation but also understand the power of handwashing in preventing disease and improving well-being. Here are a few eye-opening facts: 💧 Children in schools with poor hygiene practices are more likely to miss classes due to preventable illnesses like diarrhea and respiratory infections. 💧 Handwashing with soap can reduce the risk of diarrheal diseases by up to 50% - a leading cause of absenteeism in schools. 💧 In communities where proper hand hygiene is promoted, school attendance improves, allowing children to focus on their education and future. The connection between hand hygiene and education is undeniable. When children stay healthy, they’re more likely to stay in school, perform better academically, and achieve their full potential. Join us in raising awareness and encouraging handwashing as a key part of healthy daily routines! 💙 Viva con Agua soulbottles • soulproducts GmbH BORDA - Bremen Overseas Research and Development AssociationAmanda Mallaghan Eddy Chikuta Teza Nampasa Prince Kapelembe 🚰 Ngobi Ronald Giri Khatri Jenniver Zulu Laura Scholz #WASH #WaterSanitationHygiene #WASHinSchools #GlobalHandwashingDay #GHD24 #Handwashing #EducationForAll #HealthForAll #Zambia #Lusaka #Health #Hygiene #BORDAZambia #WASHeros
