A space habitat consultancy - making worlds better.

About us

Founded by three researchers with long-standing experience in the design and use of space habitats. We've performed ground-breaking research, including on the International Space Station, that reveals how people actually live in space. This work has been featured by CNN, NPR, NBC News, CBC Radio, Scientific American, Popular Science, Space.com, and many other media outlets. Our unique perspective, grounded in the social sciences and architectural design, allows you to ask different kinds of questions about your desired habitats and get useful answers. Our goal is to help you create orbital or planetary habitats that improve productivity, reduce costs, and support crew well-being. We move you beyond anecdotes and guesswork, to reach data-driven insights learned from the reality of space habitat operations. Our services include feedback in response to existing habitats or plans for new ones, the identification of overlooked issues in spacecraft design, and education for designers and mission planners.

Updates

  • A reminder that we are holding a special workshop for space habitat designers and mission planners on July 29 in Las Vegas (immediately prior to the AIAA ASCEND conference). We will teach you new ways to think about your design problems and to create spaces that promote happiness and efficiency in crews. Time is running out to sign up! Feel free to reach out with questions.

A few weeks ago, we posted a "save the date" message for a workshop for space habitat designers and mission planners that we'll be holding in Las Vegas on July 29, coincinding with the AIAA ASCEND conference. Here's the full invitation! We'll have informal presentations and discussion of our research on space habitats in the morning, followed by a charrette based on principles of design fiction in the afternoon. In the process, we'll facilitate a greater understanding of key issues in habitat design that will lead you to new ways of thinking about your current and future projects. You'll find more details in the attached document. You can register for the workshop at http://bit.ly/4dPCFeI! Participation is limited to just 15 people, so sign up soon, and share with any interested colleagues. Please let us know if you have any questions about the event.

  • Save the date! Brick Moon is pleased to announce that we will be running a one-day space habitat design workshop in Las Vegas on July 29, 2024 (immediately prior to the AIAA ASCEND conference, but not affiliated with it). We’ll introduce participants to new principles of habitat usage, based on nearly a decade of direct, peer-reviewed research on the International Space Station and other habitats. Attendees will also participate in a design fiction-inspired project that is especially planned to inspire new approaches to current and future habitats. This in-person workshop will be useful to anyone working in (or hoping to work in) mission planning and habitat design, but participation will be limited to just 15 people. We’ll provide more details shortly, so stay tuned!

If you're working on space habitats, you're going to want to read this post! I'm pleased to announce that the first results from the first archaeological work done in space, the Sampling Quadrangle Assemblages Research Experiment (SQuARE) on the ISS, are now available as a pre-print: https://lnkd.in/g7Ry276A In this work, we examine two of the six sample locations - a workstation in Node 2 and a blank wall in Node 3 - documented by the crew with daily photography from January to March 2022. We analyze the function of each area and chronological trends. *Key conclusions are that the workstation was rarely used for its intended purpose, if ever, and that it was instead an area for contingent storage; and that the blank wall took on associations with body maintenance (cleaning oneself) because existing facilities are inadequate.* This work validates a new technique for doing archaeology at a distance, and shows how the social sciences can reveal important features of life in space, so future astronauts' experiences can be improved. Work by Shawn Graham, Alice Gorman, Chantal Brousseau, and Salma Abdullah, along with yours truly!
