Are you a scientist or engineer with a graduate degree interested in providing rigorous, nonpartisan science and technology policy research for members of the West Virginia State legislature and gaining first-hand experience in state-level science and technology policy? Apply for the new West Virginia Science & Technology Policy Fellowship (West Virginia STPF)! Through their support of evidence-based decision-making in public policy areas involving science, engineering, and technology, West Virginia STPF fellows will develop an understanding of state legislators that they can use to enter a career in science and technology (S&T) policy. This is a six-month paid hybrid position beginning January 2024 to support the West Virginia legislature which begins its term on January 10, 2024. Fellows do not need to move to West Virginia and will work virtually. Two fellows will be selected. The Bridge Initiative is now reviewing applications and interviewing candidates for the fellowship program on a rolling basis until December 1, 2023. Apply here! https://lnkd.in/eVhNW5Kp

We LOVE to highlight previous Bridge Faculty Fellows (BFF) and their accomplishments! Kevin Orner was recently awarded the prestigious NSF CAREER award. In history, 52 WVU faculty have been honored with this award. Kevin was a part of the 2022-2023 BFF Cohort. His research focuses on recovering resources from waste in rural regions. His work embodies the Bridge Initiative mission of helping West Virginia communities through science and communication. Happy International Women’s Day! We want to highlight science trailblazer and West Virginia Native, Katherine Johnson! Katherine played a crucial part figuring out the paths for the spacecraft to orbit Earth and to land on the Moon. In the policy analysis realm we can learn a lot from Katherine and her work. She always questioned the rules set for her. We honor Katherine every day by advancing science and inspiring a younger generation to pursue a career in STEM. Johnson told students, “We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be science, engineering and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics. Everything is physics and math.” #sciencepolicy #internationalwomensday #westvirginia
