The mission of the Bridging the Gap Foundation is to increase accessibility to mental health treatment. On Giving Tuesday, December 2, we paused to say thank you to our amazing therapists who make that happen. Because of their commitment to BTGF, we have funded over 800 professional counseling sessions in 2024.
About us
The mission of Bridging the Gap Foundation is to address the disparities of access to quality mental health resources within communities of color through acknowledgment, advocacy, and assistance to people with mental health challenges.

Standing in the gap.
An increasing number of firefighters die by suicide, experiencing mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress, contracted from exposures they suffered while delivering emergency services to the public. There is a lack of culturally competent mental health and wellness specialists to assist firefighters. The Parachute Program aims to connect members of the Dallas Black Firefighters Association to therapists expanding the available resources for members’ mental and behavioral health needs. According to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, suicide is three times more likely to happen to firefighters than a line-of-duty death. A firefighter’s shift can consist of multiple exposures to trauma and the mental tolls are some of the biggest dangers of the job. The volume of calls received can be overwhelming. After calls, they can physically clean off debris. But the things they see can often leave a mental stain. A ‘parachute’ is designed to slow the descent of a person. Bridging the Gap Foundation is honored to support this group.

1 Corinthians 2:9
God is doing some amazing things at Bridging the Gap Foundation! Today, October 1, is the official launch date of our new initiative Bridges2Futures! In 2019, 11.8% of Black youth, and 8.9% of Hispanic youth reported attempting suicide in the prior year, compared to only 7.9% of white youth. Black youth, and especially Black boys and younger Black youth, have demonstrated rapid increases in suicide attempts and suicide deaths over the past decade, leading to the disparities observed today. The vision of Bridge2Futures is to connect families to therapists, remove financial barriers, and reduce the disparities in accessing care addressing the far-reaching challenges of stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues in children and adolescents. This initiative will tackle mental health disparities by reducing stigma, increasing access to care, improving equity in mental health treatment, and enabling early identification and intervention, especially among disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. A big shout to our funding source, therapists, and collaborating school districts. Changing futures one child at a time. #adolescentmentalhealth

The definition of advocacy!
I have finally come down a little bit from the 2nd Annual Bridging the Gap Foundation WALK on Saturday, September 24, at the Ron Kirk Pedestrian Bridge in Dallas. I want to express my gratitude to all the sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and 240 walkers for your advocacy for reducing the stigma and barriers to access to mental health treatment options in underserved communities. You made a huge impact. Let's do it again, September 13, 2025.
