Today the Church celebrates the Feast Day of St. Andrew. Three evangelists recount St. Andrew’s initial encounter with Our Lord: Sts. Matthew, Mark, and John. This is the account from St. John’s Gospel: The next day again John [the Baptist] was standing with two of his disciples; and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” ... One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus (John 1: 35-36, 40-42). Just like St. Andrew, we are called to lead others to Christ. Whether in the home, the workplace, or in our daily interactions with friends and neighbors, we can guide them to the merciful Heart of Christ. Oftentimes, we can lead others to Him simply by living lives of integrity and avoiding what is contrary to the Gospels. A quote often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi says, “Preach the Gospel at all times and if necessary, use words.” Never underestimate the impact of living a virtuous life! Our Christian actions and lifestyle choices may be all that’s necessary to lead an observer to Christ.
