🌍 World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024: Time to Educate. Advocate. Act Now! Did you know that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is on track to kill more people annually than cancer in the next 25 years? 🚨 This global health crisis demands immediate action from everyone—including dental professionals. AMR restricts our ability to treat infections effectively and poses serious risks to life-saving procedures such as major surgeries, chemotherapy, and transplants. As part of this year’s WAAW (18-24 November), dental organisations are uniting behind the theme: Educate. Advocate. Act Now. 📉 Progress Made Dental prescribing of antibiotics spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic but has seen a year-on-year reduction in the NHS. However, there’s still work to do to ensure antibiotics are used only when absolutely necessary. 📚 Free Toolkit Available The updated Dental Antimicrobial Stewardship Toolkit offers: Educational resources for dental teams. Advocacy tools for raising patient awareness. Actionable resources like audit tools and personal development planning. 🎯 By adopting these tools, dental professionals can contribute to the UK’s 5-year national action plan on AMR and demonstrate compliance with infection control regulations.
