Recently I attended a leadership training session in which a department manager at a well-known company announced in the first 5 mins (and a minimum of 4 times after) - "I can see the value of this training for my managers [direct reports], but I've managed people for over 30 years, so I won't get anything from it" Putting aside the fact that I thought this session was one of the best I've attended - I found the hubris of this manager to make such a statement in front of both his peers and direct reports absolutely mind boggling. I can't say with a 100% certainty that this person ISN'T the greatest people manager in the history of people managers, but odds are they are not. I doubt there's a single person considered the best in their field that would believe this about themselves, but happy to be corrected. Has anyone else ever heard someone say this... out loud... in front of others... and truly believe it...? #leadership #people #management
